Default Some Progress

Well not much progress with the holidays and a weekend trip to New Orleans for a bachelor party but I have got the tank 80% strapped and the doors are 100% strapped. I really need to make one more trip to the metal shop (but they have been closed for holidays) for the grates (square tube & expanded metal), the stack (6in pipe), and the plate to separate the firebox. I have the hinges on hand and some angle for the racks to lay on. Hope to get more done this week but have a Dr. appointment tomorrow that will put me out for the day and New Years so I dunno.

Based on the dimensions you gave in your first post, your bare tank would weigh in the neighborhood of 1360 lbs.

Fill the tank to displace any existing residual gas, but it also helps to eliminate the air space and reduce the risk of "KABOOM". I refuse to cut them for people because I work at a school and I don't want my kids cutting them, but most people I know that cut them will fill them with water, drain them, refill them with water, and start cutting with the water still in it. Once you pierce the tank the water will start to pour out, but from everything Ive been taught, that's the time when its the most dangerous anyway.

If you really want to go overkill, my old Ag Mech professor used to tell people to dig a hole, put the tank in the hole with all the valves open, build a huge bonfire over the tank and let it burn for a couple of days. Once the coals are cold, dig the tank out, and perform the fill-drain-fill-cut process. Most definitely overkill, but when you are dealing with the safety of someone else's kid, its better safe than sorry I guess.

I have the handle brackets, sucker rod and pipe cut for the door handles. Just a bit more grinding on the brackets and everything will be ready to weld. I am seeing the finish line but lots more tedious little stuff to do.

Are you going to completely weld the strap on the lids or just leave them tacked? Doubt it makes much difference, just curious how it would look painted with all the tacks instead of a constant bead.

Great job by the way. That pit is massive. Bet it will hold good constant heat for awhile once you get it up to temp.

I wouldn't worry about painting it. Aaron Franklin's pits aren't painted and it looks prettay swet as it is.
