Don't ask me why, but I've always had a hankering for older cartridges. They aren't necessarily that old or obsolete, but probably got replaced by more "modern" cartridges. Two that come to mind for me are the 6.5 X 55 and the 7 X 61 Sharpe & Hart. I've had a 6.5, but it was really my dad's rifle and he gave it to his African friend/outfitter several years ago. I've never had the S&H, but it had intrigued me for years. I'd love to get my hands on a good Schultz and Larsen Model 54 or 60 in 7 X 61.
Anyone else have this kind of problem? |

I do. My go to deer rifle is a 1895 7x57 Mauser. I have a 6.5x55 Norwegian Krag, a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and various 7x57 military mausers that are project rifles. Currently I do not own a "popular" caliber like a 270, 30-06, 243. I have nothing against them and will have one again, I just prefer the old and different.

What's the make on the old Swede? My father's was an import from the late 50's I think and he had it sporterized. It had an 18.5 inch barrel and wore an old Weaver K-3, which I still have. I loved that gun and was disappointed when he gave it away.

I was my grandmothers, I think it is a M38. It does have that short barrel that spits fire everytime you shoot it.

and it's a deer/sheep/hog killing machine. 46 grains of IMR 4350 pushing a 90 gr Barnes X bullet had thumped a lot of critters.

Same boat here. Finally acquired a 7x57 and a 250 Savage is next on my list. I've always been interested in a Sharp & Hart too. I've had a 264 Win Mag for a long time. A 221 Fireball has piqued my curious mind also.

Have two small ring Spanish Mauser 93’s. One sporterized and one original. Been looking with no luck for someone to sporterize the other for me. Both 7x57.

I do too. Most of my hunting is with a 6.5x55, 7x57, .300 H&H or 8x57J. Last year I came across an original Mauser Type B manufactured in 1905 and chambered in 8x57J (.318 bore). It's pristine and all original. It's one of my absolute favorite rifles.

I have a Swedish Mauser. 1908 date stamp, I really enjoy shooting it.
My most unusual, is really just a cartridge that never became popular, so you have to look for them : 35 Remington Kepe in mind, the 30.06 came to be in 1906. Mine was made in 1917, and my great uncle had it sporterized in the 50’s. He hunted bear and elk with it. I justshoot pigs, and an occasional deer with it. I’ll never change it. I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately... Henry David Thoreau |

Do you own a 225 Win? I tried to buy one off a fella one time it was in 340 Savage. You know that was the cartridge designed to replace the 220 Swift! Was not meant to be. Back in the 60's the 220 Swift got a bad rap as the barrel burner cartridge, so every gun company was coming out with its replacement.
How about a 5mm Remington rimfire magnum. My dad bought one, but he said ammo for it was tough to find and he traded it off for coon dog named Smoke. ![]() |

and several of which I wish I had. The 300 H&H, 225 Win (my father has one) are just a few on the list of "wants". I had a 5mm Remington mag once, but sold it due to the lack of ammo availability.

I bought a pre-64 300 H&H a few years ago off here. Good gun but pretty obnoxious to shoot much. Now it just sits in the safe. My next obsolete cartridge/rifle will either be a 7x57 to round out my mausers, or a .220 Swift. Or perhaps a 218 Bee. The beauty of old calibers is you have so much to choose from!

Yes, I am a fan of the old 6.5X55 Swede. I also like the 7X57 Mauser. I think the 300 Savage should make a comeback, think it has a lot of potential, that few have known.
I have wanted a 220 Swift for many years, never found the right rifle, when I had the money. I have wanted go get my hands on a old Winchester 1907 or 1910 in 351 and 401 Winchester Self loading, for a long time. I finally found one at a gun show, last month, I was looking for other pieces and found one, I was shocked to see it. I have not seen one in a very long time. If I had lots of money, I would love to collect old double rifles in the old big bore African calibers, such as the 470 Nitro and 416 Rigby. I would really like to try some of the old European rounds such as the 9.3X62 and the 9.3X74. I have never had any experience with rounds like those. |

Forgot a few,
Not obsolete but not common 338 Federal and 307 Winchester have a revolver is 38 S&W which would be obsolete but still made in limited runs. The 5mm Remington Magnum is a fun one that Agulia put som life back into a few years ago now have a couple bricks+ 4 boxes of Remington ammo for mine. 22-243 is no big deal since know have to make brass from 243 for it. 223 WSSM is hard at times to find ammo for. 7mm-TCU wildcat but forming brass is easy. |

Closest I can come is the old 30-30. No one can call it obsolete as it is still one of the most popular rounds around and new rifles made every day for it. But since it has been around for darn near a century and a half and was originally loaded with black powder (cause that's all there was )I'll call it a Classic!
PS, I have a 30 yr old Marlin chambered for that. |

I have an almost brand new .257 Bob Model 70 featherweight, and a probably almost "shot out" model 70 .264 Mag...
I've found nothing yet that puts them down quite like that .264...I guess it's less obsolete than it was a few years ago though... The 30-40 Krag, and 35 Whelen intrigue me though...and one day I would like to own a .404 Jeffrey. |
