    Hard to say but I wonder if the arrow hit the off shoulder, then broke as he moved and tail end backed out?

          If you found that much blood with the height of the entry point I would say you have a dead deer, he was bleeding enough to fill up his chest cavity to finally drain out the entry point...or it was coming out of his mouth through his lungs, which means at least one has a hole in it.

          Good call on bringing a dog out.

                  If you found that much blood, you're going to find the buck piled up somewhere.

                  That dog will make fast work of it. Probably 400 yards off somewhere under a tree.
