    Melanistic?

Got a few pics of this buck on camera. Looks to be melanistic to me.

I agree. The green makes him look sick though.

Based on that pic alone, I can't say that I think he's melanistic. He definitely does look darker than the other two deer in the picture though.

Is this the only pic of him?

from that one photo, I don't think he's dark enough to be melanistic

What got me to thinking he may be slightly melanistic is I don't see much white at all on the belly or legs. He's definitely darker than any other deer I've got on camera

Looks like it to me. He doesn't have a white throat patch, white around his eyes, or on his legs. Hays County has a very high population of melanistic deer; part of the central TX area that claims the highest # of melanistic deer in the country. Melanistic doesn't always translate to jet black.

There are more than a few melanistic deer in my neighborhood.
As you can see, there a few different shades.

Awesome pics ATXArcher. Do you live of Bee Caves/Westlake Dr? I see a lot of melanistic deer in front yards over there.

Yes. I like the fact that capes and antlers are never identical.
