File knives

This is my first attempt at making a knife from a file. This is what I have thus far and have a ways to go.

Good luck and keep at it! Did you anneal the file before starting to grind it?

yeah i used a clay kiln and let them slowly cool. What temperature do you normally go to to anneal a file?

With an unknown steel I would heat it up to non-magnetic and then just past it.

after you heat it bury it in a bed of ashes - a big bed of ashes and then forget about it for several hours - air cooling will retain some of the temper

Congrats on finishing your first knife! Now, tell me what you learned from it. I have found that I learn a very valuable lesson from each knife I make. You are off to a good start and I hope you stick with it!
