Default Time to change the law

There are still 10 counties in Texas where it is illegal to use a tracking dog to recover wounded deer.
Angelina, Hardin, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Orange, Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, and Tyler counties.

I was able to get on my dream lease for this up coming season in Nacogdoches.
It is going to break my heart if myself or some other hunter looses a deer, knowing I have one of the best tracking dogs in the state sleeping in my truck.

Not illegal to walk your dog on property you lease though.

Just see your pup as a hunting buddy who just so happens to be walking with you at night.

I agree the tracking dog rules in those counties need to be changed.

I agree 100%. I posted a thread about it a couple years ago. I hunt Hardin County. There was a time for the law, but that time has long passed. The old deer dogs are all dead, and a lot of the guys who hunted with them are too.

Won’t happen until you get the landowners in those counties on board but here are the guys at TPWD to contact:

Mitch.Lockwood@tpwd.texas.gov
Clayton.Wolf@tpwd.texas.gov

Send them an email and let them know it’s important to you.

You would think better to find a wounded animal than let it be out there rotting for nothing.

The problem in those counties especially Newton County is some folks think it is their God given right to run deer with dogs anywhere they want to and they ruin it for those who own tracking dogs.

It’s odd how you can smoke pot, speed, shoot a bow illegally in your yard. skip work, vote for Obama and it’s ok but break an out of date stupid game law and even nonhunters think you are a menace to society.

Not gonna happen. I was once on board with it, but no longer.

I could see it being done in the confines of a lease, but, stopping at the boundaries. SETx property owners are pretty touchy when it comes to their land. Lot of them hunt their own property and will be very upset if a tracker and his dog trespasses on their property. Can you spell fiasco?

My place is a 4,000 acre high fenced farm but I can't even use my dog on a leash.

I have lost count of how many deer Bagley has recover over the last 7 seasons.

Usually goes like this.....

I get a call from some dad or grandpa, Little Billy shot a doe with his 30/30.
They feel like it was a good hit but the deer ran into a pine thicket and they can't find any blood.

I drive up, turn her loose and we find the deer a 100 yards away piled up in the brush. I leave a happy, happy little kid that went from being afraid they had made a bad shot to being a happy kid learning a deer can go 100 yards even shot right in the lungs.

As far as keeping outlaws from running dogs, it does nothing to stop them.
They just claim they are running Hogs.

Using that train of thought, they should outlaw the use of Thermal scopes. I could shoot a deer at night. I haven't but I could .

Yessir, I hear you. In the confines of the lease, probably no issue if you contact the warden. Cross a property line, whole nuther story.

This. All of my family still lives in the Orange area and it seems percentage wise you have a greater group of people that have that "outlaw" mentality in that area. Having this law or getting rid of this law IMO is not going to help or change this issue. As mentioned before the land owners are not going to be for changing any law if there is even a TINY chance that it is going to make outlawing easier.

We shouldn't have to pretend we are walking our dog or sneak the dog out there to recover a dead or dying deer. It's BS! The law needs to change

I thought you couldn't cross property lines without LO consent no matter what county you are in. Trespassing is trespassing. So, why is that even a factor when it comes to using a dog to track?

You think they drive down the county road and have a vision that someone is in the woods at that moment tracking a deer and they go investigate? Or go sit in the woods at a certain spot knowing that in an hour a wounded deer is soon to be coming through with a Hunter with a tracking dog is soon to follow?

I feel like your post was somewhat agreeing with mine so thereís a lot of sarcasm in that.

If you are on a high fenced lease that large, surely you would have some caring and like minded hunters that would know that you arenít doing anything but recovering a wounded animal and shouldnít have an issue supporting you recovering that animal. You would have my support and I would have your side if it went far enough to the lease manager to have to make that decision.

I donít see how they could fine you for any of that unless they walked up on you in the woods in pursuit of the animal. My dog goes everywhere I go in the ranger, if I kill a deer I will more than likely need help loading it therefore I will need to go to the house to get help, and the dog would be going as well.

It is an emotional support animal. If you do not find the wounded deer you could go into a severe state of depression. It is vital to your well being.

not just newton county, this thinking still runs very deep in hardin, tyler and jasper counties,,,,

I have a boxer that loves to track,,, I use him on my property for hogs,, every time I shoot one if he does not drop I let the boxer find him, even if I see him fall a short distance away, mostly because he seems to enjoy it

Not all of them, we got some guy's from Louisiana on our place that still want's to run them but they don't have dogs anymore. I'm only 53 and killed a few deer in front of dogs as a kid but they weren't my dogs but others running them where they weren't allowed.

Why are you trying to throw trespassing in with tracking a wounded deer?

Most folks agree that tracking a wounded deer with a dog is a good thing
The same 99% agree that trespassing is a bad thing

I can't track a wounded deer across my property line without permission so why should the fact I am using a dog be any different?

If I have a dog then I am going to use the dog. If I come to a property line I do not have permission to cross then I stop. If I get permission then I continue.
At that point I have given my best effort to recover something I shot

Call the GW out to the lease. When he gets there ask him to help you track the deer because by law you aren't allowed to use your tracking Dog. Offer the GW a cold glass of Ice tea as ya'll sit back and watch your dog go to work.

Or... go buy a burner phone so you can call in to operation game thief and tell them you are witnessing a severe game violation on the other side of the county.
