Question Pistol Laws Across the West

I'll be driving to Idaho in a couple weeks for my bear hunt and was wondering what the different laws are for carrying a pistol in these states I'll be driving through. I know in TX you can have your pistol in the glove box, but wasn't sure about New Mexico, Utah and Idaho.

Also, anyone know what the law is in regards to open carry while hunting in Idaho? I haven't taken the concealed carry class yet. Thanks for the help.

New Mexico has open carry(Each city may have a law that applies within the city limits.

Look up LTC reciprocity. You ought to be good in those states but will have problems in Colorado.

Not sure about out west, but be very careful up north. Michigan I believe my buddy got one of his guns confiscated and he was fined a ton. Its good that you are checking ahead of time. Ignorance did not help him.

Guys, ďreciprocityĒ only applies to people with a LTC/CHL. The OP stated he does NOT have a license.

OP: my advice would be to call the state police or Game & Fish in each state youíll be visiting and ask them. Better than ďBut officer, I checked on the internet and the guys told me....Ē Lol.

Idaho Fish & Game allows carrying a pistol while hunting. Hereís a couple examples from their website: https://idfg.idaho.gov/question/can-...hery-hunting-0

https://idfg.idaho.gov/question/it-l...ot-and-reduced

Idaho is an open carry state. So NO issues there.

I found this on Utahís .gov website that says it IS legal to carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle IF you own the vehicle: https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title76/Ch...0118000101.pdf

Still, Iíd prolly call F&G for NM, UT and ID just to make sure there arenít any nuances to their laws. Itíll prolly take you 30 minutes to get the answers you need from those 3 departments.

Have a great hunt!
