This past Sunday, me and my 8 year old son Brady made our annual Thanksgiving trip from our home in Midland to the family lease in Freer to hunt with my Dad. This was a trip we made monthly when we lived in San Antonio, but since moving West we only make it out a few times a year.
After spending a few days taking out a few pigs and cull bucks, it was time to get to the good stuff. Our last day to hunt was Tuesday, so that morning I decided that we would sit in an elevated octagonal bow blind that a guy on my lease built. It is a very quiet and roomy blind, so I figured it would be a perfect setup for my son- this being his first time in a bow blind with me. At about 7 am the feeder went off, and a few does and young bucks filtered in. Around 8 my son whispered “buck!”. I peeked out the verticle slot window and saw a heavy horned, mature buck making his way into the shooting lane. I carefully lifted my Mathews Z7 and drew with my son watching my every move. I squeezed on my release and thump, my arrow found its home and passed through completely. The buck wheeled and ran about 50 yards and entered the brush. We waited about 30 minutes, then began to track. It was an easy trail to follow, from the arrow to the downed buck there was a 2 foot wide spray! Where it ended was a heavy, mature, low fence South Texas bruiser- my best buck to date! All made better by being able to share with my Dad and Son!
