The 204 was built as a varmint round and it does very good at that. The 223 is far more available in rifles and ammo.
I have both but will give the nod to the 204 just because it's just a fun flat shooting varmint round.
I would look at the CZ 527 American if you are wanting a "walking varminter".

On another note, now it's legal to use a airgun and arrow gun if they meet the criteria for big game animals.

Thanks for correcting me..

Having had a couple of 204s and shot lots of coyotes and cats with them....unless you are truly hunting for fur and don't want to damage it. I'd go with a 223 with a 1:9 or 1:8 twist if they make it in the models you like.
I've lost several coyotes with what seemed like good shots with the 204. 60 to 70 grain bullets outta the 223 just have so much more umph when you hit them. It will aso do better on hogs and deer if you are so inclined

I was never really impressed with the .204's performance on coyotes. Honestly can't say I've ever seen one shot by me or anyone else that just fell over dead with the .204 Ruger. Killed a butt load with a .223 and seen a lot killed by it.
Shot a big porcupine out of a tree with a .204 once and just wounded it. They're really not that hard to kill generally. That pretty much told me I needed to switch. It'll explode a prairie dog or a jackrabbit but it's not the best thing I've ever seen for much bigger than that.Last edited by okrattler; 01-19-2019, 09:31 AM.

Ive had exactly one animal walk from a 204. VERY large pig at ranged 187 yards. He plowed 15 yards of dirt with his nose and ran
Countless animals drt.
