Default One Years Progress

A buck we have been following closely finally made an appearance this week. We have had some much summer rain, causing so much natural plant growth, that he has been absent from all feed stations.

Last year (2013):

This year:

I think he will make mid 160's this year, but still cant decide between a 4 or a 5 year old. Last year he was either 3 or 4, with no clear consensus being reached among lease members. Looks like he put on about 15" to me! For reference, this is a panhandle deer. He is every bit of 220 lbs live weight.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on age and score for this year.

That one side is killer. The other side will hurt him. Looks 5 to me with him looking 4 last year.

Awesome buck. I'd give him 5 this year as well. Interesting that he switched strong and weak sides from last year.

Interesting how his right side is down from last year. That alone would get him a pass to next year. You know your deer better than I do but I cant get mid 160s out of him. I tend to underscore from pics though.

This is a tough one. I thought he was 4 last year too, but being the panhandle, he could have been three. But it's crazy how he switched sides this year, his left side is totally opposite from last year. Also, I don't see much growth year over year, I think you are looking at a low to mid 150's deer

His left side this year looks just like his right side last year and vise versa..... maybe next year both sides will look like this years "big side"

Let him go if you have the neighbors to do so. Excellent buck regardless but definetly has more to give than what is shown.

154" and 4 years old. Yall got a big place and manage it well. Let him walk this year for sure. Another spring like this one next year and you might have 170" deer.

Thats is a great deer, I can definitely agree with others on a 4 yr old, but if you like him he is a stud and mature deer in my books, put one through him

Nice buck if you shoot him he will look nice on the wall. If you give him one more year you just might have the buck of a life time and more of his genitcs on your ranch. He's about 5 yrs old should gross in the 160. Good luck

I would like to see him go one more year. Torn between 4 & 5 on his age. Either way.. Next year with another 15" of growth would be an amazing deer. Either way still a good one

I couldn't believe he switched sides like he did. I thought for sure he would match up each side this year due to the extra year of maturity and plant growth. Realistically he gained some mass, about 2-3" per beam, and an inch in spread. His beams go further forward before wrapping than they did last year.

I would like to let him walk, and we have decent neighbors, but I don't believe for a second that they would let this buck walk, even if we had a discussion about it.

Last year we had a 4year old 170" deer that got shot by the neighbors that we had decided to give the pass to. I am still leaning towards passing this buck personally, but we have to come to a lease decision. It would be a serious gut punch to loose a deer of this quality two years in a row to our neighbors.

I love those Panhandle Bucks. Are you sure it is the same deer? Same characteristics, but different sides. That seems very strange. A stud non the less.

I am certain it is the same buck. I feel I have a good grasp on our herd, and his beams and brows are dead give-aways for this buck.

I'm with the group that thinks he is 4 this year.

As for score, I came up with about 145"-151". Nice buck, good luck!

For those saying you have him at 60 and above, can you post your tine length guesses?

I just give extra credit due to the body size of those panhandle bucks. A good mature buck weights 220-230ish. I posted a picture of a buck that everybody said might break 130, ended up at 152.

I have his base at 102. 26" beams, 32 inches of mass, and 18 inch spread. I may be generous on spread, but I am also conservative on mass at this point.

So then add the upright points. I have 62" up, including stickers, etc. Deer ear length is about 7" up there on the mature bucks harvested. So assume the ear is 7" if using it as a measuring tool. Obviously he wont net very well, but I am talking gross score.

160's. Solid deer, if he is still hanging around your place good chance he may stay another year but if your seeing him at a location close to the neighbors knowing they will shoot him you might not want to risk losing him.
