So what makes a great western???

The Hostiles thread left me wondering what makes a great western. Seems the old ones most might consider a “good western” we’re all pretty much the same ol predictable plot...

Quiet stranger arrives in town, trouble comes or was already there... quiet stranger single handedly or with a small posse ends the bad guys reign...

    Am I missing some nuance?

Doesn't hurt to have Val Kilmer playing Doc Holliday. That seems to make it better.

Need a few good fistfights, a few good gunfights, a pretty lady or 2 and a bad guy that you just love to hate. Can't go wrong.

Like I said, pretty predictable plot. That stuff happens in varying order between quiet hero’s arrival and eventual upset over the bad guy.

And no Trace Adkins. Has anyone seen any of his “Westerns” on Netflix? Worst movies EVER!,,

It always helps if they can actually ride a horse.

Gotta have a rattlesnake scene, a hot saloon wench, the sweet (but hot), innocent love interest, fast horses, fancy shooting, and at least one train or stagecoach robbery.

The new westerns are trash compared to John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Can’t force myself to watch the new ones they make

Needs to start in Texas, then move cattle north , have Indians chase one of the main characters and shoot arrows in the leg, he dies . Then his buddy takes his body back to Texas for a burial under a Pecan tree

Best way to ruin a good western is put John Wain in it ,in his westerns he doesn't ever change his clothes from movie to movie , plots never change only the actors playing the drunks
