Earlier this week my old man and I were discussing how long a whitetail will live in the wild. I had heard of a 13 year old buck on a big ranch that was completely deaf. Wild stuff.

Don't be sorry. It's very interesting if he's really 14-15 years old. Bucks live to about 14 under the best pen raised circumstances. If you have a wild deer that old and looks that good that's awesome. I'd love to see pics of his jaw.

I don’t doubt it!

I killed a 10 point last year in Laredo that had no teeth and scored 87”. He looked like a rack shrinker had gotten ahold of his rack and shrank it down. He was symmetrical.

One of the hunters who watched him from about 150 yards thought he was a 3 year old. I shot him with my bow at 15 yards and I knew he was ancient!

We aged him at 10 years PLUS!

Wow you deleted the pics? Really? Thin skinned are you? I was looking forward to seeing the jaw and if he even had any teeth left at all. Oh well.

Deer can and do live that long in the wild too. We have seen it on the ranch I hunt. Not sure about 14 years on the ranch I hunt. I have only been hunting there 11 years. I know we have had some 10 year olds for sure (buck and doe). I have no trouble believing TKK.

Oh I agree they can live that long in the wild. A doe can live even longer. It's just harder to document compared to pen raised deer.

Hummm. Was my only comment. Maybe I should have said Hummm very interesting or Hummmm how do you know for sure. I didn't question or call him out for being wrong at all. I didn't realize I was dealing with a snowflake that was gonna pull his pics and go home. My bad.

Lol, well I do agree he pulled it pretty quickly. "How do you know for sure" is questioning him though.....or I guess you were just asking for more proof. Anyway, I don't think he is a snowflake. Now you are just being mean.

I wouldn't doubt what he says. They know their deer very well and shoot some giants! They pass deer that most of us would fall out of our stands if they walked out in front of us.

Unless cementum annuli forensic aging is performed age is a guess.
(Taking front teeth and counting rings much like the aging of a tree)
And I believe with the proper nutrition 14 is totally feasible.

Do a little research on that. In known-age deer cemmentum annuli was only about 10% more accurate than jawbone aging, and that was only slightly above 50%. So, years of pics is probably second only to a tag in his ear and seeing him hit the ground as a fawn.

And the way some posters immediately call anyone and anything into question, it's no wonder that the facebookers have come to dominate this forum.

Tim,

Post the pic backup, I would love to see pics of that old warhorse. Don’t pay attention to the jack wagons. Most of us want to see what y’all kill and learn from y’all on management practices. Seeing the results of what everybody does is the best part of this board.
