We just drove to Disney World from DFW. My uncle took 20 and turned south toward Mobile (Thu-Fri). I left Saturday night and went through Lafayette. My time was 3 hours less than his. So a lot of this has to do with the day of the week. We went and came back through the I10 tunnel in Mobile on Sunday and didn't drive less than 65 MPH.

Guess my point is to try driving on Sundays via I10.

**Don't go through downtown of Baton Rouge. Take 12 around

they are ALL under construction and they tear up 50 miles of road before they try to fix it.
Hope you got good tires and a comfy suspension and are not pulling a travel trailer.

btw.. doesnt matter which route you take.. they all suck... but i10 is the worst.
you obviously have never travelled or recently driven on I-20 or I-49 … both are smooth sailing as easy driving. I will agree that I-10 sucks donkey balls

OP … I travel the State for a living, pretty much every single day. I'd take this route:

        I-20 to Jackson, MS.
Take State Hwy 49 S out of Jackson to Hattiesburg, MS.
Then take State Hwy 98 S/E to Mobile, AL , merge onto I-10 go East

Do NOT go I-10 through Baton Rouge or Lafayette unless you are driving between midnight and 5am …. Daytime traffic is brutal

Has been a couple of years but we went both ways

20-49-10 is all 4 lanes and faster, also turn east at Opelousas (190) and pick 10 back up just west of Baton Rouge to shave a little time off

20-Jackson-Hatiesburg-Mobile is more enjoyable to me and only a short stretch of 2 lane west of Mobile

So if I'm leaving Austin on a saturday around 8:30 AM, and headed to Orange Beach whats my best route? I don't check in until sunday around 4. I do plan on taking my time and stopping saturday night to sleep.

You'll probably have to take I-10 since it's the most convenient. Lake Charles or Lafayette is the 1/2 way point. LC has better night life if you prefer L'Auberge or the Golden Nugget Casino, although Saturday night rooms will be priced higher than giraffe nuts ($300). Laf has better food and culture. Leaving Sat a.m. for GS shouldn't be to bad as I can advise on an eating, hotel, and driving itinerary in Laf.

FYI - Laf to GS is 300 miles, 4.5 hrs non-stop. Budget 6 hrs if you have girls needing to pee and stopping for food/gas

Laf to ATX is 375 miles/5.5 hrs
