    Best footings for woodies?

I am building some arrows for a buddy that just ordered his first bow. He used the money he saved while in Afghanistan, so as a token of my gratitude I'm building him a set of wood arrows the best I can. I'm going to match his arrows with his new bow from black widow. They will be port Orford cedar shafts made to look like tyger myrtle ( what the limbs are made of).
His riser is going to be ziricote, so I was thinking a darker wood for the footing, but will also stain to match if there is a better wood for footings. If anyone has some suggestions on the wood or process a reply would be most appreciated.

You could use almost anything--walnut, maple, bloodwood, purpleheart (although I'd discourage that because it's so difficult to work with). Here's how I do it:
