    Take down recurve

I'm building a youth take down recurve for a coworkers son in trade for a custom knife. I ordered my supplies from Binghams and the specs I'm going for is 48" AMO, 25 lbs@ 22-24".
HERE WE GO!!!! First we have to build a form to press the limbs on. One thing I've learned from others before me is build the form correctly and it will make building a good bow easier. What I mean by building a good form is, use good quality wood, make the curves and lines as smooth as possible, and the bottom of the form needs to be right on 90 degrees and no twists. The limbs on this little bow will be 1 1/2" wide so that is how wide the form needs to be. I started by using cabinet grade ash plywood, lots of titebond II and screws, cut two pieces to size, glued and screwed them together to get the thickness.

Next I did a rough layout of the pattern then split the form with a rough cut down the middle of where the limbs will be.

Then I sanded the top of the form to shape.

The top of the form is not nearly as critical to have smooth and 90 as is the bottom because the limb laminations rest on the bottom of the form and a compression hose is between the top of form and the laminations. You'll see later and understand. To get the bottom good I cut a pattern from 1/4" plywood and the belt sander to get it close then some hand sanding to get it really to where I want it.

I then attached the pattern to the form with a couple of screws.

I'll be using a pattern following straight router bit. Look how clean and smooth of a cut it makes!

Getting the bottom of the form straight and at a good 90 degrees help prevent "building in limb twist". Checked my form in several places and all of them were a tight 90, smooth and straight!

I'm thinking this form has turned out really good and should build some good limbs! Its just about finished , just a couple of little things to do to it later.

I might get in the shop a little tonight? During the day today I get to go to college with my daughter! She had hip surgery last week and is on crutches and can not put weight on that hip yet. So, I'm being her "book boy" today carrying her books.

I'm following also Matt! You always do a great job on your build alongs and restore threads, this one should be no different.

I've been thinking about doing some youth bows myself, so this should be interesting!
