So screw someone first if there's a chance they may screw you at some point in the future! Glad I could learn something from this thread.

Maybe a lot of you making the excuse that the employer is the bad guy work for McDonalds or Sonic. I think the OP is talking about people with real jobs. When you do something meaningful it can be disruptive if you quit without notice.

Did you read what sir shovelhands posted right above you?

It is not about screwing anyone.

It boils down to employee and employer not owing either one a **** thing.

There are different ways to handle termination of employment by both sides

I have given my two weeks 2 times, in an industry that typically accepts your notice and escorts you out the same day. In both cases I was asked to stay on and help make the transition a smooth one. In my opinion, even if you know that your employer may let you go on the spot, advanced notice is the proper approach. Only a fool would burn a bridge that could just as easily be left standing. I now work for the same company that I had previously left and I guarantee they wouldn’t have hired me back if I’d gone out by text.

I've been layed off at least 50 times, I've drug-up prolly 20 times.....all within the last 30 years. I never got a notice of more than 10hours that I was getting layed off....most times it was about an hour before quitting time. Sometimes they'd get my notice that morning, sometimes no at all. That's how it worked in the refinery/ Chem plant business since long before I stepped thru the gates in 1986.

I've seen a 14 yr employee ask for a raise. She never got one, but a competitor offered her 20% more. She went and gave her two week notice. No counter offer. Out the door she went that day. Well, bye.

And more often than not, that’s how it works.

So you accept a job with certain responsibilities. As you work over the years you get more money along with more responsibilities. So you know if you walk out one day the boss is screwed with no one to do those things...But that's ok?

Now if you're a burger flipper or working in a big company with 100's or more employees it may not matter.....

And what your saying is no employee no longer should be thankful for a job. I'm glad I no longer own a business if most people think along these lines. And it's no wonder the employer is escorting people to the door if they know employees think they don't owe the company jack squat. Nice attitude.

And why does it work that way? You all know the answer. It's because people think they're owed a lot more than the money they agreed to. They get bitter and go where the grass appears greener. Why in the world would a company expose themselves to the risk of an employee like that? And if you happen to be an honest guy that gives a two week notice and walked out the same day that's the lawyers fault. If the company walks the "losers" they have to walk everyone.

Did you require your employees to bring you breakfast and tell you how much they appreciated you giving them the opportunity to work for you?

If don't give 2 weeks notice you are not honest?

I’m in the same situation I took vacation while taking another job. I did this so I can make sure the job I was taking was a good fit and I enjoyed it if not I still had my old job. My boss knows I’m dependable and have been looking else where. I don’t get paid much at all there so this is about my daughter not me. I also took the vacation cause I worked to earn that no telling when I get it again. After this week they will know whether I’m staying or not. He has also allowed to do a lot of outside work cause he knows I make more that way. 10 dollars a hr is hard to stay loyal to.

No medium to large size corp is going to give you any notice and I have seen 40+ year employees weeks from retirement escorted out by the effing LE with no notice and not even allowed to go get their personal items, they told them it would be in the mail. I could give a crap if someone gives two weeks to this type of company and most are now like this.

With that said I always give two weeks because in the end if you walk off without one you aren't screwing the corporation or management. They are still going to go home at the same time and count their dollar bills. You are only screwing your team members over.

And with that said. EFF Globo Corp in all its many forms.

He should have given you two weeks but his loyalty to his family trumps his loyalty to you.

I’ve heard several people make the argument that you gave him an opportunity and he should be loyal in return. If he was going to be your right hand man, he must have been pretty good at his job. So, the way I see it, is that his production was the return on the opportunity you gave him.

I gave 2 weeks in my last job busted my *** to make sure I didntnlook like I was slacking those 2 weeks. My boss was so butt hurt he didn't talk to me for those entire 2 weeks and we shared a desk.

Then a friend of mine told me after I left they brought in IT and tried to find something on my computer to justify not paying my PTO and other benifits out.

When they hired me they promised a promotion in the job offer meeting if I got a certain license I got said license and then got told no on the promotion the spot was still open though. Not sure what they expected but I found better.

I will still give my 2 weeks every where I work but that's the kind of stuff that makes you think why bother.
