Default Why do we go

As I have gotten older I've realized that the primary reason for going to the lease now comes from my need to just get away. Living in the DFW area with 7 million of my closest friends gets old fast. The lease and God soothe my soul.

I didn't see a single animal in my sit yesterday morning, but I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, and just enjoyed being there.

I'm with you. After probably 30 years of leasing my priorities have changed. Despite having a mediocre deer herd, our smallish place just over an hour away is all I really need. My chances at a wall hanger are greatly reduced but I'm trading that for being able to go any time I feel the need to get away and decompress even if it is just for one day/night. Sharing the place with just two longtime friends is also priceless - no drama.

With my property only 45 minutes away, for many years it was just a one day thing that we went out early in the morning and returned home in the afternoon. Now that I have a trailer there, it has been nice to go out there to relax and enjoy some friends and kids coming out some of the time. Mostly just like that I don't have to be rushed and can relax.

In complete agreement with this post. I am older now, so the time spent with good friends, BIL, or my son is quite fun. Just as it was with my father 45 years ago. I also know I am there to bring home some venison, hunt hard for a trophy mount, but most often I just care that I enjoy the quietness, the focus of the hunt, and listening to the rain on the roof of my blind. I cannot wait for November. Moving to Webb county this season. I am fired up.

Yes sir. As I’ve gotten older I appreciate watching to woods wake up in the morning and watching them go to sleep in the evening. I appreciate the smell of the woods after an all night rain. I appreciate watching birds flutter and watching squirrels jump from tree to tree. I appreciate the quiet and the time to thank God for all he’s done.

For me its a little different. Yes its nice to get away and the peace and comfort. But its also do work and maintenance. Since my family owns it puts a different spin on it. As for hunting I hardly hunt anymore. Just not that mad at them. Now the fish on are place are in trouble because I am really mad at them.

That’s been my priority for awhile. While I still need a couple deer each year for the freezer, once that’s accomplished it’s still something I look forward to. It was especially so when I was still working. It’s much easier to let a marginal age buck walk now than it was several years ago.

Yes I agree and I love making improvements to my set ups, the roads, the camp all off season, then relaxing in the blinds during the season. Shot my bow and killed my buck in October never fired another shot with rifle of bow the rest of the season. Just observed, took pictures, documented and let my guest do all the killing.

One of the places I do nighttime hog hunts is near Belmont, between Seguin and Gonzales Very little light polution there and just sitting under the stars, watching the big dipper, Cassiopea, the Pleides, Orion is great, and occasionally see a satellite pass over as well.

I go out to fill feeders and do my lease work. i mostly do that for the joy of not having the noise of the metroplex rattling around my head. I enjoy the big wide open, seeing a bald eagle on the Red River, watching hawks hunt, listening to quail talk, admiring Wilbarger County sunrises and sunsets, and on and on. Shooting an animal is a bonus. Photography is a great substitute.

I love setting up the camp, blinds and feeders.
Even trimming shooting lanes. Then enjoying all the varieties of game I get to see. Especially the rutting bucks. I got some decent photos this year I wish I was able to share. Last hunt sunrise photos from Baylor county were especially great.

I only shot a couple of does, some pigs and a coyote this year, but had a great season.

I love the time spent with friends at the lease as much as anyone, but not of y’all would be driving 5 hours to hang out at a campfire if you couldn’t kill deer too.

It restores my soul, period! Sold my small ranch 6 years ago after a nasty divorce and now live on just over a half acre with my best friend who never gives me any grief about heading to the lease.

Like many of you, I started hunting at a very young age as my late Father absolutely loved it. Until he passed, he and I taught my 3 son's all we could and gave them the experience of total "bliss" in the country.

Like several have wrote before, "I'm not mad at 'em anymore, lol." With that said, my middle son keeps us in Venison, Elk so the need to fill the freezer is not there anymore. I've killed ONE Buck in 4 years and a few hogs when I see them. But experiencing the camp, friends, family and grandkids will always bring me back year after year until I just can't get there.

NOTHING better than 1st light, listening to the sounds of birds waking up and then, just maybe then, a critter I can't pass up....

Agreed, I work in the city, my perspective has changed because of it, although I really do put in the work for deer in general I’m good with just getting plastered by a fire with good company in peace and quiet
