On the very spot we are standing in the first photo, our maternal grandfather, Gerald Gillies, lost his life 74 years ago today when the B17 Chowhound was hit and went down near the French village of Lonlay l’Abbaye. The Chowhound’s tail containing our grandfather landed on a farm, and today surviving members of the owners of the farm (along with their families) graciously invited my mother, my sisters, and me into their home. Several of them were small children when the plane crashed and have memories of it. The family along with townspeople and the mayor honored the Chowhound’s crew at the monument in the village and took us to the locations where the tail and the fuselage came to rest. They had erected a flag pole in the field where our grandfather was discovered and raised the American flag in his honor. It truly was the experience of a lifetime.
