I'm going to use these old sewing machine bases as end tables. What do you think I should use for the top? I thought about just making a small wooden frame then just put glass so you can see the frame from the top. What do ya'll think?

If you glue wood together to make the tops, several precautions are necessary. #1 Varnsih both the top and bottom with equal coats or it can warp. #2 do not use anchors from the bottom that fit snugly in the frame holes. Restricting the wood from movement will cause the joints to crack. If you look under most tables, there is a groove around the skirting in which a angled clip is inserted and screwed to the table top. This is to ensure the top can move if necessary. #3 Alternate grains from cupped up to cupped down if possible, It will make for a flatter table in the long run

depends on the house or setting its going it. as mentioned before a piece of granite would look great. Some old barn would works great if its just for decoration, where no one is going to be touching it. If people are going to use it on a regular basis, and set cold drinks on it and food, the wood really needs to be sealed with urethane. I have seen guys drill holes and put the brass from shotgun shells around the edge; looks real cool. Then just urethane over it all.
