Default Little pond project getting underway.

I started pushing and digging dirt it of this ditch several months ago. My little 40 something HP Kubota can only do so much. Finally hired a local guy with a dozer to do some real work. Pictures incoming.

I started digging the core trench a few weeks ago, mainly to find out how deep and what kind of clay/caliche Iíve got to deal with. The pond will be on a dry creek, but does see lots of water when we get decent rains. The large cedar trees behind the JD will be removed. Iím guessing it will be 60-70 wide by 120-150 feet long.

This is on my to do list but no clay here so I might have to do a liner. Good luck and can't wait to see the after pics.

Better build a park around it and put in benches, or the TBH Nazi's will beat you up for calling a "tank" a "pond"! You will enjoy the heck out of it. Congrats and looking forward to the end result.

The deepest part right now is about 5. We are hoping for it to be around 10, so hes got to go quite a bit deeper. He will get back on it Monday.

How? I know at my parents we could go about 3 ft down before we hit rock.

You will enjoy the heck out of it though

This project started about 20 years ago after I built this house. The entire yard was just white caliche, so I borrowed a small tractor and started digging out the dry creek bed (100 yards uphill from where excavation is being done now) The dry creek bed has lots of black dirt that was good enough to spread out over my yard to plant grass on. I finally bought me a little Kubota and about 6 months ago, I started digging out the dry creek bed to make a pond/tank but hit a hard rock bottom. I started digging around and found the edge/end of the rock shelf(about 10 yards uphill from current tank location and was able to dig down almost 5 feet which got me into pretty good whiteish looking clay/caliche. Iím prettyís sure the dozer will be able to dig down deeper, hopefully without needing to use the rippers, and seal this thing up.

Now, any rain in the forecast?😬

Dozer work is done. I need to do a little smoothing work with my box blade.
We are happy with the work done, just need some rain now. Itís pretty deep, and a little bigger than Iíd planned. (I asked the dozer guy to do as much as he could within our budget-and he did!). Very excited!

Looks good. Go ahead and get some different structure in there if you are planning on stocking any fish. Stock your perch and minnows now and give them a couple of years to get established before adding any predatory fish. I canít stress enough to add different structure.

What kind of soil? Looks like a lot of sand and rock, and if so now would be a great time to spread sodium bentonite.

It’s all clay/caliche. Not much rock in that location.

I got a few hours of tractor work in this weekend. Cleaned up some rocks, and just general clean up. Itís coming along. Decided to take a few mores pictures with the EZGO in the deep end to show better contrast to size and dept.
