I found some new spots in the Moore last week. That place never ceases to amaze me.

Am I reading it right that you can only harvest does and an unbranched buck during muzzleloader season in the moore?

This is true for the entire Forest during ML season, actually. No USFS permit required. Basically same quotas as for archery, except can't harvest a 13"+ buck during ML season.

Hows the hunting in the areas off Hwy 87 near 6 mile? I would think crowded due to all the folks that have camps around there.

The hunting is good, WT are in abundance on or property but been overrun with hogs last few years. Still see some giants strolling out to the feeders late season.

Hey Marshman, There is some beautiful country there in the six mile area. I would say that the buck(mature) population is thin, since it is public land. The only way that I hunt the area is by still hunting large blocks of country, keeping a low profile with scent control, where I see no sign of hunters, and once I find sign of a big buck, using the knowledge of the land from 20 years of hunting it, I try to set some hunts for him. This is not easy, to say the very least!

The one thing I do not do is hunt without at least a little knowledge of some good buck in the area, sometimes from just the previous years hunts. Hunting areas on the National Forest without this knowledge can lead to seeing no bucks the whole season.

thats good advice. I wish we could harvest at least one doe in the NF 9besides the doe permits on Moore Plantation). If I get a permit this year I just may hunt there exclusively

I went this past spring for a turkey hunt with no success, did see some deer and deer signs. I would like to make a trip over there for a hunt with out much scouting I think it may be a hard hunt, heck I have a hard enough time hunting the Sam Houston.

I saw a group of 6 turkeys when I was up there last week. Usually see one or two while scouting.

I have been seeing much turkey this season of 87. Hopefully they are still roaming around there in April.

Yep, but that's why I love it. The challenge! Dont get me wrong, I've got no problem with sitting in a nice warm blind over a feeder any day, but there's just something about public land that keeps bringing me back and I have yet to take a deer on public land other than drawn hunts.

That turkey on my avatar is from Sabine. It is definitely holding some good birds. I have never not seen deer when I go up to my turkey spot either.

Of course it was Norm...that's the same Charles you met at the banquet a few years back. He and I hunted together and took our birds hours apart day. Was a good successful couple of years after that too..

Never made it out to the woods but did see a ton of deer and hogs on the side of the road during the day and early in the morning. I believe I'll be able to get back up there in a couple of weeks. Dont think ill hunt in the Moore plantation. Just national forest.

Default Hey fellow SNF hunters

I just wanted to say if you've ever seen a silver Dodge truck on hwy 2426 (near hwy 87) Moore Plantation, that's me. Stop and say hi if you ever see me packing or unpacking on the side of the road. I've hunted SNF (mostly that area) for many years now, and I've got some good pointers.

Also, ticks are real bad right now. I've noticed the past couple months (while scounting) that their increasing rapidly. Do yourself a favor and invest in some Permethrin before venturing out.

Put in this year for a doe tag in the Moore plantation. Ive never really hunted in there. I have a couple of questions. Do you need a type 2 permit to hunt in the moore plantation? And if you are only hunting does with a rifle would it be ok to hunt from the ground in around the pipelines on the moore plantation. I usually hunt up near Ragtown.

Yes a type II license is required for the Moore plantation.

I hunt around six mile. I must have seen your trucks before. I see the same group of turkey crossing the same spot for the last 4 years. They are always clearing a different area every year. If you see a black Chevrolet 4x4, or a black nissan frontier, that's us.
