Well, I went out for an axis doe. My lovely wife was wanting some backstrap, so out the door I went. Feeder went off at 4:30 and I had 8-10 whitetails come running in. I had seen a group of axis making their way in to my left before the feeder went off so it was just a waiting game. All the whitetails were eating in front of me when I heard something thrashing some limbs to my right.. figured it was a whitetail buck shedding velvet or something. Saw a long tine through the brush and knew immediately that I needed to get ready. At this point, all of the other axis were in sight about 40 yards straight out. One of the whitetails spooked and all but one took off. The axis scattered, too, except for the buck. He stood still in the tall weeds for 3-4 minutes like a statue. All I could see were tips of horns so I didn't know what he was exactly. The doe that stayed calmed down and began to eat again. All the buck needed to do was step out 5 yards and I'd have a 25 yard shot. Another minute goes by and he takes several steps and makes his way out. I drew back and let the rage eat! He went about 30 yards, stood there for about 20 seconds and tipped over. I was pumped! A pleasant surprise on this Sunday. I am blessed!
