Default M1 Garand

I bought a CMP M1 Garand last year and finally talked myself into a day off from work

Went to the range yesterday to test it out

Its been rebarrelled in .308 Winchester

National Match rear sight aperture

I must admit this is the best of 6 targets

8 rd clip per target

Takes a while to understand what a military 2 stage trigger is all about

A tad amount of trigger creep

Once you get that mastered the whole open sight concept is the next lesson learned

Overall not bad for open sightsName: 20190205_124156.jpg

What ammo were you shooting?

The 147 FMJ bullet is not known for accuracy.

They are so much fun to shoot. I've been considering picking one up myself.

Is the target rotated to the left, so that the top of the group is to the left and the bottom to the right?

If so I would say you have a pretty good group and something sliped mid string and you shot the last three rounds high and right. The standard issue M1 with M2 ball is a 3 MOA rifle. They will shot better than that for sure, but that is the standard.

thecmp.org/cmp_sales/m1-garand

It does not state RM1Service grade is 06 or 308

I would guess 30-06

Another peculiar aspect of this purchase is this

When Congress passed the law allowing cmp to exist they excluded them from ATF standard firearm purchasing procedures

when you purchase a rifle from cmp it takes 30 days

Cmp does an FBI background check

They dont go through ATF

If everything is good

They approve the sale

Box it up

And send the rifle through the mail directly to your door

No ffl transfer

Sounds weird i know

But cmp has some special desiganation defined by the act passed by Congress when they were created

I got one from the CMP a few years ago. It’s a mid-50’s H&R receiver with a new Criterion barrel. I really enjoy shooting it.

There are some stipulations to qualify.

NRA membership works for the club affiliation if I remember correctly.

It does not, unless maybe you have proof you have been shooting matches, but just being an NRA member does not qualify you. I know if you are a USPSA member and have proof of shooting matches it will qualify you, cause that is what i did

May have changed, but I used either NRA or TSRA to buy rifles from them in the past.

I love my Garand and have won several CMP John C. Garand matches with it. My only advice to a new garand shooter is to take special care reloading and make sure your le not over pressure because really the only thing that can tear a Garand up is the ammunition you put in it. A bent Op rod will ruin your day.

Right, it was that proof of marksmanship or other related activity that i was thinking about. At the time i ordered mine i had an NRA and TSRA membership, but i had to meet one of those other requirements and didn't have a chl, etc. But i did shoot USPSA which met those requirements. You may have satisfied those requirments in a different way

I just knew I had bought from them, but it was years ago. I had my CHL though.

Have a wonderful day.

You have to have a club affiliation. They have garand collectors association you can register online for $25 that will do. I have chl also. I'm selling a couple to buy a Garand. Its on my always wanted/bucket list to own. Don't think they'll go down in value
