A few weeks ago, for my 25th birthday, my dad took me to 4Amigos Ranch in Eagle Pass, TX for a spot and stalk ram hunt. I have been on numerous spot and stalk trips before but this was my dad’s first time. We planned to ONLY shoot 1 ram each. Yeah, well, that didn’t happen.
I started off the hunt with a successful stalk on a Texas Dall Ram. I stalked into 19 yards and made a great quartering away shot right in the vitals. I was extremely impressed with the toughness of this animal because he was pumping from both sides and was still standing. I followed up with a frontal shot straight to the heart and he expired.
Moments after, my dad stalked a Sandy Dall Ram that was in the same group as my Texas Dall. He made a 150 yard shot on him with his 300 win mag and dropped him in his tracks. After that moment, my dad was hooked. He turned to me and said THAT WAS AWESOME! And he wanted to keep hunting.
Over the course of the next two days, he shot a huge Corsican ram and an Aoudad female.
On the last day of the hunt, I had two failed stalks on a Painted Corsican only to finally get it done on the 3rd try. I made a successful shot from 65 yards and he was down in seconds. It was a great weekend and a trip I will never forget.
