Two mid morning, two evening (last two hours). However, most good close encounters have been morning, just circumstances occurred that prevented a good shot opportunity. Had one 1:20 pm encounter at a wallow that was ruined by a pine squirrel.
While I haven’t personally killed an elk I have participated in a team effort. Evening. The evening hunts seem easier also. Thermal shifts. You can stay lower.
