I was finally able to find a hog tag for Granger! You all are right, those things are hard to come by. Went out there on Sunday and toured the San Gabriel unit. I saw a few deer but no hogs. I also found a KillerTech bolt and a broken Beman arrow. The broadhead is in decent shape though. Think I'll try another area next time I venture out there in a couple weekends. Welcome any suggestions.

Hello first post on the green screen. Been making weekly trips to granger for at least last month...trying to put in some miles and learn the units..put in about 8 miles this weekend between several units. Bumped into Carnage Saturday evening. He let me tag along with them. Didn't jump any hogs saw few deer... just hunting wherever the wind is in my advantage..can't get a hog if you not out there... i be out least one day each weekend over next couple weeks if anybody wants to meet up. Planning on trying to make GRXH this year.

Welcome to TBH and welcome to Granger hog hunting; you need to be thick skinned for both!

Keep going and keep posting, many of us are out there quite a bit and you already have the best plan for learning; just go.

If you have facebook look up Granger Ranger Group; it is a closed group so let me know who you are (Rojobeard) and I will let you in.

Don't miss GRXH, you will learn more (and see more) in one weekend than all year!

Hey guys, I shot high a couple days ago on a 120-ish lbs male out at granger right before dark. The arrow went through both sides but got stuck at the fletchings. After he ran over a half mile he made it into some thick brush. I couldn't follow the blood for more than 400 yards back. I have been pretty torn up about it (and in a state of semi-disbelief the last few days) and if anyone sees the hog please let me know. The fletchings on the arrow are yellow/white with a g5 montec broadhead.

Don't beat yourself up too badly over it, coyotes (and there are a bunch out there) gotta eat too. It happens on pigs, they are tough, just get back in the saddle; you will get one eventually.

Where were you at Granger? We find arrows all the time out there...

Been trying to make weekly trips to keep baiting and putting boots on the ground. Wont be for another week until i get back out there since I'm in South Texas nilgai hunting!! Ive found quite a few tree stands out there in the san Gabriel unit and ground blinds....does anyone have any issue with my climbing in for a sit if its vacant?

Is your pig pipe on the Florida Point, if so it is empty. While stands are personal property, hunting is first come first served on the WMA. So, it is technically legal to hunt another's stand, a lot of us have done it in fact, just use best judgment if the owner shows up and you are in his/her stand.

yeah its been 2 weeks since ive had a chance to go fill the pipe, ive been pretty solid at keeping it full and dumping some koolaid corn out to try and keep the pigs in the general area! I just don't want to use someone elses stand they took the time to setup and walk up to a stranger in it. I don't mind people hunting my corn piles or anything for the little bit it last as long as everyones pretty gracious and courteous as well! We're all on the same team and i know a lot of people have some sticky fingers.....that's just **** human beings to take someone elses stuff. ill fill the pipe and piles back up next weekend! still in south texas on this nilgai hunt that's kicking my ***. but did manage to smoke 2 big boars yesterday!

I waited out the rain and went back for my second time today. Actually saw three hogs but they were too quick for me to get a shot off. I'm going to chalk that up as a win. Anyone else go out there today?

Man I lost two hogs and found two broken arrow this Sunday. Trailed one until the rain washed away the drips of blood, arrow was broken about 250 yards from the shot. Spent the rest of the day looking to no avail, spotted one walking back to the car, lost him immediately after shooting in the grass, found my broken arrow w some blood but never found a speck on the ground. Using helix Broadheads. What do you guys use and where do you aim? Iím trying to find out what Iím doing wrong so I stop wounding animals and wasting meat. Both shots were slightly below middle of the chest. One was broadside and one quartering away. I guess I need to aim even lower but would still expect some trail!!

Go four blade or two blade with a bleeder; I use Stinger Magnus, love 'em. Two blade don't leave much of a blood trail, usually.

Aim lower and right against the leg, right through the shoulder is even better.

Quartering away, same thing aim lower; it is real easy to shoot through the upper back, above the spine, on a quartering away shot.

Aim low and forward, pig vitals are more forward than most people are used to shooting. Keep at it, you will get one.

Thanks, I think I will switch from the helix for hogs. I tried them because I thought it would help to get full passthrough (as opposed to my g5 montecs) and was hopeful about the single bevel design (supposedly forces a twisting motion) but the blood trails were minimal and I didn't get full passthrough through the shoulder of the first one anyway. The second arrow broke at the fletchings on the way out and I suspect the fletchings/nock portion plugged up the exit wound.

How far do you normally have to track them on a decent hit?

I might not take shots at them if they are within 10 yards the waist high grass anymore just because it is so **** difficult for me to track them.

Two blade single bevel do all that, unfortunately they also leave poor blood trails compared to other styles. The single bevel is best for splitting bone, not necessarily for soft tissue penetration, although the twisting motion does cause a lot of damage. If you hit hem in the right spot, they don't go far.

I prefer a good two blade with small bleeders, the Magnus has held up well, I also like Zwickey, tough and easy to resharpen.

Everyone always talks about making a marginal shot count, and this is where the two blade, single bevel design shines, if the marginal shot is into thick bone. But if it is a marginal shot into soft tissue covered in fat it may well kill the animal, but you may never find it due to a poor blood trail.

I don't need to break bones coming and going, just on entry, and then I need the penetration to get all the vitals. My arrows with 20% FOC and a good solid (but not single bevel) broadhead will do that.

With a decent hit, double lung or heart, however far they can run in about 20 seconds; some pigs are faster than others.

Thank you, that's good info. If you feel you got a good shot do you take off running, chasing the pig to try to keep line of sight or stay still and hope they don't run as far and you can track the blood?

I wait, but I will check the blood at the impact point right away; then follow the blood once I see what kind of blood I have. The blood will let me know if I need to go right now or wait a bit.
