Default Wife got in a wreak today ....

She is shaken and banged up . Walked away . She had a major concussion bruised ribs and chest . Was ran of hi way 59 outside Victoria. Lady who ran her off the road kept on driving . Hit a dry creek full of cement running 70 to 75 . On top of about a 4 ft drop off . Pretty sure the tough county bumper saved her life . Air bag never went off.

Those heavy duty bumpers donít allow for the sensors to activate and usually prevents air bags from going off. Talked to a guy at an auto shop repairing a troopers Tahoe from a crash a few weeks ago. Trooper had a bumper, brakes went out on a pursuit trooper went straight into woods and a big ditch. He had seatbelt on and slammed head on steering wheel. Tahoe was totaled and air bags never went off. Body shop said the sensors never registered a wreck.

Glad sheís okay, Iíve thought about those cameras too.

I thought they were triggered by inertia over a certain amount of g force?

If thatís the case they should go off regardless.

Delta-v doesn't appear to be high enough or within threshold to deploy the airbag. Also the bumper guard can hinder deployment as well. Have reconstructed numerous Chevy pickup accidents and they seem to have a slightly higher airbag threshold deployment, especially on the earlier models. Glad she's okay.

Dang, glad sheís ok. Not sure if this is the same scenario or not but years ago my stepdad changed lanes and basically ran a car off the road. He pulled over and apologized (minor damage to the other car), but his insurance denied coverage. They said he never actually struck the other vehicle so it wasnít his fault. He ended up covering the repairs out of pocket.

I am going to get one also but have no idea which one to get. There was a thread on here within about a year that had good in formation as I recall.

Prayers sent. Be careful with the concussion recovery and don't let her rush to get out and about.

Iíll do some more research and asking around, because I thought the same. It made sense to me, but I thought there was also an inertia trigggwr too. But he showed me several sensors, not the keep you from hitting stuff sensors.

****! This is a good reminder to wear my seat belt all the time..All my trucks have had a big arse bumper up front(for deer)Everytime I've been told the bags may not go off if in a car wreck..Which I'm pretty cool with. Those things freak me out.

Thank God she was ok. Very fortunate.
On the other hand the problem with heavy duty bumpers is that they don't allow the airbags to deploy and also make for an even harder 'hit' or impact since the vehicle can not give or conform to the object. That being said I have one on my truck. Definitely had some one looking over her shoulder.

Glad the wife is OK and not more seriously injured.

With that being said, I disagree with all the ones saying that these front end replacement bumpers/grill guards hinder the deployment of the air bags. I had a 2006 Ford F350 C/C PSD and hit a telephone pole set up in the Academy parking lot here in Lubbock several years ago and mine deployed. I was not going street or highway speeds, but cutting thru the parking lot and not paying attention. The bumper I had was made in Midland and had the big pipe as the main part of the bumper. the pipe broke and crumpled, but not a single piece of grill of body was scratched, just the bumper. I still say there is fault that the bags on this instance did not deploy.
