Default My Cancer update

Had a scan last week, and combined with a scan in November, I am happy to report no tumors at this time. Yay me.

If anyone remembers, 2 years ago this month I went in the hospital and had a tumor removed from my spine, hardware on my spine, and my left kidney removed. Most of February in 2016 in the hospital. Also did 15 radiation treatments. Did therapy, walker, cane, and then walking good again. Went along until October that year, and had a tumor show up on my tailbone. Was taking radiation treatments, slipped in the shower and broke my femur on November 10, also dislocating hip joint. Had a bad reaction to oral immunotherapy drugs and lost 40 lbs. so this time last year I was circling the drain. Finally got past bad reaction and could eat again. Doc started me on Opdivo infusions. Well, no side effects or reactions, and me able to eat again, I started gaining weight back. Long road recovering from the femur fracture. 2 weeks of in house therapy twice, and 60 visits outpatient therapy, progressing from wheelchair, walker and cane, finally graduating off the cane in October 2017. Still can't walk a long ways yet, but I am getting better. 2 straight scans with no indications. Will still do quarterly scans for the forseeable future, along with Opdivo infusions every 2 weeks. Luckily the infusions don't effect me other than 1/2 a day at the lab getting it done. Here I am 2 years into a 2 to 10 year prognosis, and I feel better than I have for 2 years. I couldn't have survived this without my wife, and very good insurance. So tonight, I am hoisting a drink to ME and Her.

Once again don't ignore localized aches, and for goodness sake put a mat down in your shower.

Sorry for the long winded post.
My cancer is Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma. If anyone is curious.

Good news to hear and you are absolutely correct about the shower mat. My wife slipped and fell in ours a couple of years ago. We had bath mats and I asked her where the h*** it was....she told me it was in the wash....I told her go get another one so there would always be on out. Again congrats on your report.

Yep, gotta have a mat. Cost me a year of recovery, and probably never walk right again. Sit down showers ever since. also learned that bathroom doors are not wide enough. Had to take door off the hinges, walker wouldn't go through.

Many thanks, this site has kept me going. I had bought a new bow 3 months before this started. I had went down to a 60# bow, but still am not strong enough to pull it safely in my back yard. got my dads old 50# Mathews out and starting with it. Bad parts of this is not being able to take grandsons out hunting, and not being able to afford it due to not working much. If I keep improving at this rate, shouldn't be a problem much longer though.

My lovely and talented wife is 1 yr. with clean results. Also had clear cell carcinoma, but only had a partial nephrectomy.

Good news, hang in there. I had my left kidney removed due to Renal Cell Carcinoma in September, 2016. We caught mine early enough that it was totally contained in the kidney and I didn't have to have any chemo.

My back has been bothering me some along my spine
I had a spot that got sore. I thought it was a disc, as I have had lower back issues for a long time. After ignoring it for about 6 months it got worse fairly quickly. I took my oldest grandson to the DSC in 2016, and by the time we left, I had very sore legs, and lower back. I had an annual with my primary doctor a couple of weeks later. Told him I guess I need to set up with my orthopaedic doc. He suggested I let him do x-rays, so we did. 20 mins after x-rays we set up an MRI. this was on a Thursday. did MRI Friday, then set up CT scan. Did that Monday, we knew by then that I had the spine tumor in my T7 vertebrae, and my left kidney was almost a complete tumor. While going home from CT, a neurosurgeon called me (PCP had set it up) and said he had an opening in his office the next day. I stumble in to his office, as since Thursday before, I barely had control of my legs. He asked how I got there and I told him I walked, but wanted a wheelchair to go back to the car with. He says, well you are part right, you are getting in a wheelchair, but you are not going home. Said if I wasn't on blood thinners he would perform surgery to day. Said he sees 1 or 2 cases exactly like mine a year, but they are usually in the ER, and the vertebrae has broken, and the patient is paralyzed, and they never get their legs back. So they wheel me down to admitting and I go to the Neural ICU. Friday I spent 5 hrs. in the cath lab occluding the blood vessels that went to the tumor, and back surgery on the next Sunday morning 5 days after admission. I stayed in the Neural ICU until the kidney came out 10 days later, then went to a regular room.

What save me most likely was the tumor was in the thoracic area, and the rib cage somewhat stabilized it.

Went in the hospital on February 2nd, came home on February 27th or 28th.

No symptoms whatsoever until it moved from my kidney to my spine. First sign of cancer, and I am into Stage 4. They said the tumor may have been in my kidney for as much as 10 years.

Hospital bill for February 2016 was $528,653.00
Thank god for good insurance.

My advice is don't ignore persistant pains. If I would have acted faster, I would have better legs under me now.

Kidney cancers are the step child of cancers and can feel like a nagging back ache for years. Mine was over 8cm but still encapsulated and had not metastasized. Passing blood was the big hint... and the baseball size tumor attached to my kidney.

Enjoy every minute of life!!!

I woke up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain from kidney stones. I went to the emergency room. While checking for kidney stones they discovered a mass in my left kidney.
