Hunted a v-notched tree, ground blind, no corn at a good crossing where I had been seeing deer come from for several weeks. Wind was finally right, and two doe walked in at thirty yards behind some brush....when they finally turned broad side they were nearly blocked by the right side of the tree and a third smaller doe walked in behind as the look out. As they first two made there way right to left and were just about in my lane the third turned broadside allowing me to raise and draw on the left as the first and second doe stepped into the lane. Leveled up and waited for her to step calmly forward and let it go. Clean hit, ran about 40 yards (shape of ?) into thick scrub with a solid blood trail to follow.

Winds picked up pretty good here, so I decided to sneak out for a quick snack/nap. Seems like someone educated these public land deer pretty well. Saw plenty of bucks today with 3 in my shooting zone. Between the last two days I have seen at least 5 different bucks that I could identify differences on. All I can do is shake my head and watch em pass through. Maybe tonight will bring a different result. Anyone else hunting the last few days of season?

Switchback, hope you are having better luck than me assuming you are out hunting. Fast changing weather today and lots of people out. Seems everyone has been cooped up with cabin fever until today. Havenít seen this many people out and about in months.

Yep. Just one of the fallacies of having a public land forum about the place you hunt. And all the critters ya see, for the World Wide Web to know.

I only expect more folks to give "public land" a shot, the more they hear about it.

Not directed at you jgould. Just a PSA.

My self, don't know how much time I've got left in my lifetime to hunt public. Body is wearing down. May be a day soon I'm no longer able to get out there due to all the work that is required. And leasing has almost always been out of my grasp due to my income, most of my life. But I can say in my 30+ something years of hunting public lands here, that I've got some great memories; trophies in my mind.

After all, the "True Trophy" is the memory that is created. Not the mount on the wall.

Been trying to Chino. That's the best thing for what I got. But it don't go away. Just relieves some. Gonna get back on the bike very soon. Bought new cycling shoes Friday. But also been working some very long days. Just got off a 12 day week Friday too.

And so another deer season comes to an end at Whitney and Aquilla. And to the deer hunters, hope everyone had a great time.

I'm gearing up for some sandbass and crappie action. Maybe a little striper and cat action in between.

Did some more post season scouting on areas I left due to the heavy pressure. Glad I did, hardly any fresh signs anywhere except one yearling I came face to face with.

Was headed back to the boat ramp this evening. Saw two groups of turkey that came to water just before dark. One group busted and flew right at me over the water. If I had stopped the boat, I could have caught one out of the air. Or beat one down with my hand.

But I didn't.
It's not turkey season yet.

If we don't get some, I mean a lot, of rain, there won't be a spring run for sandies. They will let their eggs go in still water. Sandies need moving water to help keep bacteria and microbes from growing on the eggs and attacking the embryo. Survival rates go way down when they have to drop their eggs in the lake or still water.

Nearly all the lakes in Texas are low or below normal, with exception to the Red River valley lakes.

Will be interested to see how the fish react. This will be my first spring down there where I have had enough time to really pay attention. We darn sure could use a week of long steady rain.

I agree we need some rain. I haven't been out there in a while but I'm thinking about going out this afternoon and tomorrow to check things out and do a little shed hunting. Let me know if you want to tag along.

4 or 5 foot above normal won't hurt the campgrounds at all. But I don't want any more than that.

Good news! The W lake has come up a few inches. Where as the A lake has come up 1.13 feet in the last 24 hours. But both are still below normal.

Somerville, Granger, and Grandbury are the only ACE prjects at or slightly above normal in the Brazos Valley basin.
