10 minutes into a 3 day hunt at our place in Zavalla County. I hate shooting on the first sit, especially 10 minutes in, unless itís a no doubter.

I let him walk...

Do you only have one tag? He definitely needs a dirt nap.

If he's not a shooter the first day, then hes not a shooter the last.
At least that's my rule for myself.

Oh he meets all criteria, mature 8 and Iíd be happy to take him. But weíve also killed some great bucks here and I like to get a feel for deer movement before I smoke one

Hope you don't regret it either. That's a bruiser of a buck looking at his body. Sucker's got a neck on him!!
Good luck! I'd likely have done the same...

Zavala county not a shooter you made the right call unless you are trying to cull out all 4.5 yr or older basic 8 pointers

As part of our management program 4.5 and 8pts or less are culls. But I only get one tag...deer movement will tell me if I should use it on a Cull or not.

It all depends on what you are there for and the quality of bucks on the ranch. If you are on a mature 8pt or less hunt, then you messed up. If you have a shot at a trophy, then see what else walks out. IMO

Why does everybody in the hunting world hate on 8 pt deer? Nothing like a big ole mature 8 and anything above that is just a bonus.

Yeah, only a few small bucks chasing. Typically we see most of our big deer chasing around the 2nd week of Dec

This evening I had the buck pictured as well as this deer feeding side by side for half an hour with no dominant displays. Bucks stayed separate from does except for the few yearlings that did a little harassing.

Ryan, obviously you haven't bought into the philosophy of "never pass on the first day what you wouldn't pass on the last day".....

Typically I do, but I didnít drive 5.5 hours to tag out in 10 min on a management buck. Itís a gamble that hopefully will pay off. Either he comes back out or something larger. Either works fine for me.
