Stumbled onto this old photo last night unpacking my parents at their new house. My great grandpa with a pretty solid bow buck circa 1960s.

He was a great hunter and like most of the good ones an even better story teller. I would sit in the floor in front of the fireplace and listen to him tell hunting stories until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. What I would give for just one more of those nights.

He killed several giant bucks but as far as he was concerned a big buck was the one that weighed the most. 90 percent of the racks he had ended up hanging from a tree or given to anyone that wanted them. "Can't eat horns" ya know.

true giant of a buck. It just goes to show that bucks like that can be grown without protein. Age definitely takes the front seat. That would be my favorite picture if it was my grandfather.

Here's another from about the same time frame. Same pickup I think. Not a bow buck but I still count open sight Winchester lever guns as traditional.

Great pictures and memories.
That first buck looks like it was hanging out around the nuclear test ground in New Mexico.

My mom has several old pictures like this but nobody remembers the details.
Just a suggestion : write down the story on a slip of paper with dates, location and names as you know them. Place it behind the picture so they stay together.
Someday your kids or grand kids will l want to know.

The story goes on the bow buck that my Great grandpa was walking a creek bottom and the buck was up on the creek bank standing on its hind legs eating some kind of browse out of a tree or honeysuckle or something.

The rifle buck was said to have been shot at around 150 + yds with the open sight 30-30. He was said to have been the 5th and smallest of 5 big bucks walking up a fence line and was killed with the last round of many that he had in the gun. Not sure how much the story has grown over 4 generations but from the looks of the bullet hole in the bucks front leg the story could be very possible

Bet you could build a fire this winter, lie down in front of it and you could hear him.

What's even better about this buck is back at that time in Oklahoma if someone saw a track it was a big deal and people would come over just to see it if it was on your place. To shoot a buck of this size you were a legend. Great photo and buck.
