Default Hunt overseas and end up in jail??

A buddy of mine just got back from hunting in Cameroon (Africa). He had two videographers with him, and they stayed one more day to see a couple sights before catching their flight home yesterday. Right before they boarded their flight, they were arrested and taken to jail and interrogated. Apparently, the folks in Cameroon thought they were spies, because they had loads of camera gear in their luggage. They were in jail almost 2 days before everything finally got cleared up so they could leave. Could have been worse, I guess.

My buddy told me today that Jim Shockey got detained earlier today or yesterday in Russia. Basically, the same deal..... "Why do you have all this camera equipment?"

I just saw this on Shockey's facebook page, posted yesterday.....

Err err. Was pulled aside at Immigration and now my Russian interpreter and guide are explaining to the Russian Immigration official why I'm here with Sat tel phones, drones and zillion dollar high res video cameras...and firearms! ...not going so well.

He has posted a couple other things today that show that he's hunting, so I guess he talked his way out of it.

Seems like it's just the camera equipment throwing up red flags. Not all that surprising

I got detained for a couple of hours in Zimbabwe. They spread all of my possessions and cloths out on the floor. After a search that asked where my weapon was. I pointed to my longbow, unstrung...they still didn't get it, so I strung it. Upon finally getting through to them, they laughed at me, drcided I was not dangerous and let me go.

I did have to pay a fine/fee only charged to Americans and Australians.

My buddy's camera guys tried to pay the Cameroon guys, but they wouldn't take it. Apparently, they actually thought they were spies and not just shaking them down for bribe money.

That's crazy.....

I was planning a trip back to SA. I have friends there. After looking at some of their facebook posts, concerning all the recent killings and violence going on there, Ive had a change of plans.. Im afraid that I may have taken my last trip to SA.
Should be some great deals coming for those willing to risk it though.

I am heading to SA to hunt in July. Been there several times on business, now going for pleasure. Never had any problems there.

Buddy went hunting in Mexico years ago and they all got robbed. Not border guards or anything, but when they got to the lodge some dudes took all their guns and told them buenos dias. He swore he'd never go back down there.

Why go all the way to Africa when you could go to Mexico and potentially have the same thing happen?

There's more animals than I have room for heads on my wall right here in the good ole USofA. I'll stay home and enjoy the hunting.

They don't even have bridges to hang your decapitated body from in Africa...

Crossing into Canada to bear hunt in 2008 we were detained and asked why we had all our camera gear. It wasn't because they thought we were spies though. They thought we had lied on our paperwork and were actually entering Canada to work as a film crew. We explained to them that we indeed were prostaff on a hunting show but we didn't get paid anything to do. We simply filmed our hunts and they were aired on tv. It took a while to convince them but they finally let us through and stamped all our paperwork.

We were just part of a random search that evening as we crossed. They weren't amused when we wanted to film the whole the thing either. They said no.
