My son's and I killed some javelina on a trip in January. I saved the hides and I'm having them tanned. Aside from just laying them out on a table are there some creative ideas you guys may have to make something out of them? Pillows? I'm shoulder mounting one with the hide flared out so we have that base covered. Thanks.

There was a guy with a ranch near ours that was saving javi hides to make some boots out of. Not sure if he ever did but I wouldn't doubt it. This dude could've been the Dos Equis guy Lol

I was gonna say either boots or gloves. Best gloves i ever had were pig skin. Dad gave them to me to help him out when i was like 6. I have my own son now at 26, and they have one nail saized hole at the base of the thumb.

I believe that they used to be trapped to make gloves out of. The hair made pores that supposedly kept your hands cool.

And, fyi - for those of you who are saying pig / hog hides make great gloves - that may be so, but javelinas are rodents, not swine. ![]() ![]() |

Know a guy who makes self bows who says javi hides make great leather. Not sure what he uses the leather for but he has no interest in pig hides.

Seen a leather shotgun shell holder that had Javi hide accents. Was pretty cool.

So I got the hides back with thee hair on. North Texas Tannery did an amazing job. Their hair is like thin porcupine hair, very course but a cool color. I really have no idea what to do with them (2). The hair is long too. For now they are a table topper on our trophy room bistro table. I'm not thinking they would make a good bikini for the wife.

So is the scent gland cut off and the hole stitched back? Those things smell, bad.

OK, so I shot a Javi and my buddy showed me how to flesh and scrape it. He's going to cut it into strips. He explained to me that he backs the bows with the hide strips and that it strengthens the bow. It also gives the bow a really neat look as you can see the pores from the hide. I'll have to post a picture when I get home.

Skull mount, shoulder mount and rug. I’d think a rug would be cool in the man cave. Just tan it and put it on the floor.
