The Neutral Density filter knocks down the available light allowing (requiring) me to use a slower shutter speed. I wanted the slower shutter speed so that the water would have a smoother look to it as waves and ripples moved during the photo. Ideally, I'd have an even darker ND filter but I used what I had.
