Got our census data and harvest recs back from the biologist

Pretty much inline with what I was thinking:

    8 bucks:

Including one 6yo+ trophy i.e shoot the biggest deer on the ranch
Potentially including any 6yo+ that has either gone down hill or is undesireable
Anything over 3yo that we find undesireable(weak tines, crabclaws, super narrow).

    5 does: All yearlings.

Overall our herd composition was 48% bucks, 28% does, 24% fawns.

    One deer per 8.88 acres.

All that said Im sure we will shoot all the doe numbers. I doubt we get all our bucks killed.

Why did the biologist tell you to shoot all yearling does?

Normally because the older does know what they are doing (as far as being a mother) is what I was told.

Hopefully there's a "because they are cutest and best tasting" kind of answer

I was also thinking that maybe fawn survival rate is higher with older does

              That's a great reason.

Older does typically have twins....better recruitment.

Turned in our data beginning of last week. Very anxious to get our Rex's back. This is our fist year in the program can't wait to hear what he tells us. We are small acreage but have a ton of deer.

How many acres are yall on?

We are 330 acres low fence. Based on our spotlight surveys I calculated us to be one deer per every 4 acres at a 1 to 4 buck to doe ratio. We will see how aggressive our biologist will be on our first year.

You got some studs! Best of luck this season

Just completed our third survey. #'s are way up and fawns are everywhere. It will be interesting to see what the harvest rec is from our biologist

You have a biologist for 330 acres low fence?
