My group drew choke canyon north shore for management deer. First time being drawn for anything and only took 5-6 years.

If you haven't heard of the Texas Youth Hunting Program do yourself and huge favor and check out www.tyhp.org - phenomenal program that puts on youth hunts all over Texas every year. I have a good number of posts about how great it is.

I'm going to get Hagen involved next year as he is only 8. I figure these draw hunts are a great way to meet people and see terrain you may not hunt on a regular basis.

I've hunted on the WMA that's owned by the park. Tons of deer inside the park. BTW I drew this same hunt so I'll probably see you there.

Racking up the points on this draw. Not sure though, I got a 2nd on the 9-1 draw, which was a surprise. I don't expect lightning to strike again.

Drew Pedernales Falls SP Annex Gun ES 12/9 to 12/12 with 2 points. Kinda feel guilty about it. It’s muzzle loader/archery, so I’ll be doing archery. Hoping to stick a pig or a axis. Time to start going thru the old posts for info.

I'm sure I will. It's a pretty good drive for me. I camped there last year and it's a nice park. The weather shouldn't be too cold early in November so I'll probably tent camp.

My son never drew on a youth hunt. We did several over the years on standby but never drawn. The really crappy part is the points from the youth categories Do NOT carry over to the adult ones so he started over on points. I suggest you enter him on at least one adult hunt in each category along with your entries so that he will gather points. Itís free for youth to enter so no loss even if he canít go on the hunt if you actually get drawn.

Been on a youth hunt years ago and have hunted there with the walk on archery quite a bit in the past. If you hunt on the east side of 2288 (the lake side with the campsites) you should see lots of deer. Some of the hunts there have been real meat hauls in the past. If you hunt the west side of 2288, which is the area where you can do the walk on archery hunting, the deer might not be quite as plentiful but still should have no problem seeing deer. There have been a few axis roaming around the north end of the park but havenít heard of one being shot in the last few years. Had a really good Fall and Spring with rain so deer should be healthy. Got a lot of deer on camera already near Twin Buttes which is only a few miles away. Hunting is by assigned box blind. Terrain looks a lot like South Texas with lots of mesquite and cactus. Some compartments have longhorn cattle so donít dump corn in big piles or you wonít get them to leave. Keep it spread thin and they have too hard of time picking it up and likely move on.

Went last year on a management hunt with son and FIL. Here is live hunt thread from last year: Going live at Mason Mountain WMA
https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?sha...4&share_type=t

First tip is to call now and reserve a room at the lodge. Itís free but is first come first served. Most of the rooms can hold a group of four. Thread has a few pics of the lodge. They also have a very nice shooting range right behind the lodge if you need it. Have concrete tables and lead sleds.

You will love the place. One of my favorite hunts ever even though I didnít get anything. Iím putting in for that place every year now on.

We'll get together for sure. I just saw where Stoof here on TBH drew too. I'll probably get there Monday afternoon and set up. I called the park yesterday and they said it would be fine to get there Monday. I'll be in a gray F150 with a TBH sticker in the window. Can't miss me.

Same here, lodge is top notch. Personnel there are very helpful and nice. I've been at least 3 times there, always lots of game. Been to 2 management hunts, the last one it rained continuously for 3 days but still saw LOTS of game, plenty of deer too but antler restriction was just too tight for the deer I saw(5-points or less). I was seeing everything 6 pts and above, some really nice ones too! You'll enjoy watching the exotics as well. I apply for that hunt every time I can.

I currently have 2 'pending 2nd draws', what is the timeline for these happening after the 1st draw? I was drawn for one already that may conflict with one of these and permit deadline.

I got a room booked and I checked out your link. Sounds like it was a blast. This is a really quick hunt, but I think he'll enjoy seeing some new terrain.

I made an aerial for him this morning with the compartments overlayed based on a little research.

Mason Mountain WMA by Chad Crawford, on Flickr

You can zoom in really close while looking at it on the iphone and it's extremely clear. Maybe it will be nice to have on the hunt.

Been there twice. A climber or lock on is what you need. Pretty much creek bottom, which is what I'm used to hunting. Find the right acorn trees, you'll find the deer. Or hogs!!!

I squirrel hunted there last year and it's some beautiful woods! Should be a good hunt. I saw plenty of sign chasing the tree rats!

Appreciate it! What kind of deer are out there? Not that it matters, any time I get a chance to hit the woods is a blessing, just wanted to know what I should hold out for if I get the opportunity

yeah, the one I won is due by the 25th. Are they doing it differently now? I used to get several cards in the mail all at one time and they would all say that I had NOT been selected, like they had drew them all at the same time. I guess they're stretching it out now?

No more non selected cards in mail. You check status online to see that you were not drawn. They only notify by email if you are drawn. There are several deadlines that are either the 1st or 15th of the month. All the hunts will be drawn the day after its respective deadline and all the 2nd draws will be 10 days later. On drawing day it seems to take a couple hours for all that days draws to happen and the results to get posted.

I really wish they would do all of the drawings at the same time, like say August 1st to give people time to arrange for the days off. I have been drawn for something at each of the drawings so far and its been a major issue lol. I know, I know......

That would make for an exciting day! Although we currently get to look forward to two more rounds of drawings. So there's still hope.
