Default Pitcher son's progress; school axing sport

Son Eric currently pitching at Univ. of Nebraska - Kearney as the closer for the Lopers (short for Antelopes). Doing pretty well with a 1.96 ERA, with 19 K's over 18.1 innings, 1 Win and 5 Saves.

Here's the rub: about a month ago, the baseball team was informed that the 113-year-old program is being eliminated next year. Let that sink in a minute. They're also eliminating men's golf and men's tennis. Total savings from cutting these three sports is projected at $450,000. Well, the baseball team raised $150,000 totally on their own in one night at their baseball banquet a week or so before the administration's elimination announcement.

Apparently, there is a $3.4 million budget shortfall at the university. Pretty sure the announcement was intentionally delayed so that players had participated in too many games to "red-shirt" this season -- can't imagine administration didn't know this was coming well ahead of announcing.

Coaches are getting players in contact with other programs for next year. Eric has had contact from a Big 12 school and several from other D2 schools, including at least two written scholarship offers. Feel bad for the whole situation -- players, coaches, the school and the community.

If anyone knows of programs needing players for next year, UNK has some guys looking. I'll try to attach a couple of video links of Eric below.

Go Bulldogs! Thanks for the bump.
He actually went to Navarro as a direct result of a highlight thread I posted on TBH back in high school. A TBH member involved in the sport knew a coach and suggested he call Eric; he did, then had the boy go up and throw a bullpen.

Small world.

Whole thing is definitely crazy. Team has great facilities -- high-tech diagnostic equipment (Hit Tracks) can tell inches of pitch movement, spin rate, etc., complete indoor facility, funded by former Yankee standout reliever Joba Chamberlain.

Also, the staff recruited far and wide to build this team: guys from Texas, California, Illinois, Oregon, even Australia.

Appreciating the good wishes and prayers.

Definitely trying to look at it as a "mysterious ways" of the Lord type of thing.

Right around there, as a mainly two-seam fastball. With good differential on slider (curve); plus, has a change-up that goes down and away from lefties.

Pitches to off-center contact, producing a lot of ground balls and popups. Still manages to maintain pretty much a career-long strike-out per inning pitched ratio. Not many walks.

Seems odd, alright. Baseball program almost pulls it's own weight, looks to me like. Paltry savings they're seeming to capture by swinging an axe instead of wielding a scalpel.

And, by the way, the Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts' (R) is a member of the Ricketts Family, which owns the former world champion Chicago Cubs. He is independently wealthy to the point of writing his campaign a personal check for $12 million when running for office. I left a message with his secretary, informing him what a travesty was occurring at UNK and suggesting that -- as a Baseball Man -- he should just write a check for $3.4 million to UNK so that the baseball program would not be cut. I'm not sure if that check's in the mail yet...

Sorry to hear this. Glad he has other options. I hope it works out well.

I went through this 2 years ago at Paris JC with a golf program that had been around since 1916. Myself and the volleyball coach were brought in by an academic guy. This was in late May!! We both had already resigned our to be returning Sophomores and had recruited our Freshman class. All the freshman had been committed since December and been given their scholarships offers for the Fall.
This was the most disrespectful and hideous thing of all. All those plans by kids and parents went up in smoke with no chance of finding a place to go with such short notice. Most embarrassing thing I have ever been part of.

The whole thing was over money. In our case to save about $150000. Admins will drop programs at the drop of a hat without small town community support. In a small town if a proper board is in place and the community rallies around the sports teams then and only then will the admins get dropped before the sports do. The board at our place could careless about sports. So that was it!

The President in our case was a gutless coward for not to telling us and our players her self!!!!!!!

Programs are being cut all the time unfortunately. The big schools get bigger and the small schools barely survive.

San Jac down in the Houston area just dropped the men's basketball team this year.

I hope he finds another place where he is wanted.

Wow, Dave.

Thanks for your kind thoughts.
Pitiful the way y'all's situation was handled.

As for UNK, wife and I went up a couple of weeks ago, and some locals said there is an effort being put forth by the Chamber of Commerce and some leading citizens to get the program reinstated. We'll see. Meantime, players have to make plans elsewhere.

I'll be heading out near Kearney on Friday. Too bad about the program being cut. I'm sure he'll find somewhere to play, hopefully with a better location then the middle of Nebraska!

Definitely will update progress. Thanks for the support.

Occurs to me that some viewing may be interested to see all the Loper players available, so here is a link to the UNK Roster page. Clicking on each player's name leads to detailed info on his individual bio and stats, etc. To see more team info, just click on the "More+", and there are tabs for the Schedule, Coaches and, well, more.

https://www.lopers.com/roster.aspx?path=baseball

(FYI, Eric's height and weight listed is from high school, now he's actually 6'2", 210)

Will confirm that no women's sports were cut. When I talked to a UNK assistant vice chancellor, she acknowledged that Title 9 definitely is a factor in keeping women's sports budgets' protected.

Does the Univ. have a Softball Team? If so, why cut the men's team? Doesn't make sense....especially if the baseball team raised a good chunk of money recently...

Yes, sir. UNK has a women's softball team, along with golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, soccer, swimming, cross country and track and field -- all of which will remain intact, to my knowledge.

And, I would have no desire for any of those sports to be cut, either. The fact is that Title 9 is a federally mandated way of life in college athletics. Not an expert on this, but I know others are -- Dave....

Also, I don't know enough about the politics of Nebraska to understand if this was a "splashy", attention-getting move to get more overall funding for the school or higher education in general, or not. The administrator I talked to said 38 faculty and staff are being cut, as well, at the school.

Bottom line: it's a dirty deal for the guys who committed to come play ball there, and it stinks for the coaches, who went all over the country to improve the program, not to mention all the supporters who have raised money to build and maintain first-class facilities. So now the players and coaches have to go looking for places to catch on, abandon relationships, due to the stroke of a bureaucratic pen.

Thank you.

In addition to our man, I'm really hoping for good things for all the guys and coaches. We've gotten to meet and know quite a few of them, and they're a good bunch of folks. Any coaches viewing should really take a look at some of those guys on the roster link posted above.

(Edit: Roster link on Post #21)

Update from yesterday's game. Our Team won 26-17.

Eric pitched the 9th in a non-save situation and got 3 up/ 3 down via strikeout, popup and groundout. He now has a 1.86 ERA, with 20 K's over 19.1 innings. Said he threw mostly sliders.

I know.

We (UNK) have a lot of homerun hitters, and Fort Hays State hitters were real aggressive and could hit fastballs. Seemed like a football game, where the team with the ball last would win. I was glad Eric could hold them hitless in the last inning.

I was a football player in college, West Texas State, dropped after 1990 season for similar reasons as Kearney but also involved NCAA issues (we actually played Kearney). Almost all of us underclassmen that were starters were picked up on scholarship and most of us went up in classification, several of my teammates ended up being DI all conference and one was an All-American. We were a pretty good bargain for DI schools with our playing experience and immediate eligibility. I had played against John Randle (I was playing, he was actually assaulting or quite possibly attempting to murder me), Keith Traylor, Michael Sinclair and several other NFL D lineman in DII.

Baseball is a little different world (my brother was a DI baseball player) but I would think the guys with that level of experience will still be viewed as a bargain to the other schools that are looking.

Best of luck to your son, I know he can't help but feel like he has been betrayed by the university but at least in my experience the outcome was better for me...I ended up getting to play (albeit not very well) and later coach at the DI level, would likely have never happened if I had stayed at WT all 4 years.

You bet but haven't been a Coach in more than 20 years.

It was like child abuse playing those guys but it taught me at 18 that I better find another career path soon, NFL wasn't happening for this kid.

Plenty of life lessons in baseball, generally. It's a hard game. Failure is a big part of it. Shoot, "failing" 7 out of 10 at bats will get you in the Hall of Fame.

Eric just got another Save (his 6th). Entered with one on, one out, and got a groundball double play to end the game in a 6-3 win over Washburn. (1st game of a double header; should be able to get streaming video and play by play at links provided above.) Second game underway.

Looks like 2nd game may have been delayed or postponed.

Weekend Update:

Just pitched a scoreless 9th vs. Washburn in a 12-11 loss. Gave up a single to start the inning, then basically got all three outs himself, with a 1-3 putout on a sac bunt, 3-1 out at first and strikeout, stranding a man at third.

Stat-line now: 1.71 ERA, 21 k's in 21 innings, 1 Win, 6 Saves.

Now has 3 written D2 scholarship offers and a solid Big 12 D1 invite for visit.

Thank you, Dave! Nice to have some options. Kid has definitely performed as advertised. Garnering serious interest.
