Default Menard Turkey Hunt

Had a window of time to sneak in a turkey hunt with my son. Wind and birds were rough on us last weekend. Hopes where high for this trip.

Got to the lease late in day yesterday. Winds and temps were good. Set up in a spot graciously shared by a lease member and settled in for the evening. No much of anything 4 till 6:45.

Finally had a gobbler answer. He appeared about 75 yards about and studied our decoys. He gobbled again and cane in on a string. He stopped about twenty yards out about two feet short of where my son could shoot easily off the field pod. He stood there for about 5 minutes. Purring and in half strut. He gobbled again and my son fell apart- total turkey fever. I finally got him to lean enough for a clear shot. 8 in beard, 1 inch spurs.

We were met with quiet birds and wind this AM. After a few hours we were returning to the camp house, calling randomly in ridiculous wind when i thought a gobbler answered. I called back and he replied. We were caught in the open along a road and fence. We piled up behind a agarita and waited. Two eventually came in silent- but we couldnít get a clear shot. I finally had my son stand and shoot, which resulted in a miss. He was totally bummed- but it was a great effort under the conditions.

We love spring turkey hunting.

Default Menard Turkey Hunt

Thanks for hunting in Menard County, the Turkey Capital of Texas. Birds have been pretty quite due to dry conditions and wind. If we can get some rain this weekend, the end of the season will be better than the beginning.
Congratulations on a nice bird!
Adios,
Gary

I got to go one weekend. It was tougher than normal, had a guy at the lease stirring them up for 3 days before I got there. But managed to kill 3 good birds by myself. Had to camp on one for 1.5 hours before he would move 20 yds and into range.......
