New to AR world: 22LR and .223 combo?

With these sub $400 ARs popping up I'm tempted to jump in.
Only thing is I want to put a lot of rounds through one with plinking.
Anyway to run a bucket of 22LR through one and then switch up and bust some hogs with .223/5.56?

Is it as simple as changing the barrel?
I'm looking for two guns in one here.

They have adapters that replace the bolt carrier to enable the rifle to shoot 22lr.

This is an excellent little product that is a must have for any AR15 owner. Shoot 22LR with your AR15 with this simple little adapter by CMMG.CMMG .22 Conver...

I bought a tacsol kestrel 22 upper for my AR 15 SBR lower. It works great

You can but I wouldn't. I use a dedicated upper for the .22. Lead from .22 bullets can plug up the gas port and lead to problems. If you do use one make sure you clean it frequently.

Wouldn't copper plated .22 solve that issue?

So you can shoot 22LR in a 223 barrel?

Yes, but the bullets are undersized so it doesn't lend itself to accuracy. I'd recommend a dedicated upper, or buying a different rifle such as the M&P 15-22.

No, it won't. .22 ammo doesn't have a jacket. The plating in very thin. It comes off easily. Especially when you shoot it in an oversize bore. The main problems are that the bore size is wrong as is the twist rate. You also have about two inches of freebore with the conversion kit. .22 ammo is extremely dirty when fired from a blowback conversion.

The bottom line is that accuracy is usually always poor. The upper and lower will get really dirty. The gas port and barrel will usually get leaded up if you shoot them enough without cleaning. Given that, they are a lot of fun and inexpensive to shoot. I have a couple of full auto kits that are a blast but I use a dedicated .22 upper.
