Those of you who are landowners, more specifically on smaller tracts, what has been your experience on the effect cattle do or do not have on the Deer in the area?
I live on and hunt 200 ac. I run 10 cows, bull and don't notice notice any adverse effect.
This is south of Lampasas.
Hunted south Texas from 1990-2006 that lease was 6000 ac and if a cow stepped into the sendero the deer left.
They get to see to them. Even see them grazing the same fields. Step in some cow patties on the way in for a natural over scent. I do not use pens and have no issues
I've hunted where there were a few cattle with no problems but when they dump a couple hundred feeder cattle in the field the deer leave. Based on hunting in Oklahoma and Kansas
I agree. Fence the food plot as the cows will eat all the goodies and you’ll have nothing for your hard work but some fatter cows.
I would say fence your feeder if you plan to feed protein. Cows will eat all you bring.
If the feeder is unfenced and the cows come in while you’re sitting I find a slingshot will dish out some discouragement without much noise and get them moving on. I have had a bunch of turkeys swarm in after my feeder went off and cleaned me out. No real defense against those guys. [emoji35]. I put a remote control on my feeder after that happened a couple times.
Growing up the places we hunted were always our cattle leases. The deer wouldn't mix in with the cows buy they seemed to be okay with them in their vicinity.
