I was finally able to connect with a buck after a 7 year drought a couple of days after Christmas.
I went down and hunted my family's property in Live Oak county after Christmas. I arrived at our place the Wednesday after Christmas around 2pm and hustled to get in the stand and was finally able to get settled around 330. It was cold and cloudy with a light mist most of the afternoon and I started seeing deer within 15 minutes of being set.
I was hunting a new stand that I had setup about 3 weeks prior in pasture that overlooked a couple of draws and good mesquite thickets.
Over the course of a couple of hours I watched a total of 6 different bucks and about 8 does. The bucks were interested in does and chasing them sporadically, although I wouldn't say they were chasing hard.
At about 530 a young 6 point came walking by at about 40 yards, got downwind of me, and trotted off about 100 yards from my position. As I watched him move away I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and this guy came walking out about 80 yards out. He was moving away from me as I tracked him in my scope waiting for a shot opportunity. He stopped to check out the young 6 at about 100 yards and I dropped him where he stood.
He isn't a high scoring buck, but he is a good deer for our property and I am very excited to have had another opportunity on our place.
(For the life of me I can't figure out how to rotate the picture correctly, if anyone can assist please feel free to rotate away!)
