It would be interesting to speculate whether the 1860 Republican Convention should have been ended after the first vote with the candidate determined because he got a plurality of the first vote rather than the majority. The eventual candidate lost the first two rounds of voting, but was elected on the third vote with a majority. So, if the person with the most delegates going into the convention always wins, we would probably have never heard of Abraham Lincoln. i do agree it should not be someone that has not gone through the primary process. Just a little piece of history.

CNN has a mini-series running for a few weeks called "race for the white house." They featured the 1860 republican convention a last Sunday. Amazing amount of dirty tricks played by all sides. For example, Lincoln's supporters forged 1000's of delegate passes and packed the hall with supporters before the opposition arrived. It runs for a few more weeks on Sunday nights.
