    Newbie questions about target practice

I've been thinking about target practice and how much I'd rather not practice, but I still want to use a bow. I don't have a hunting license. If I were to get my hunting license would it be more acceptable to get my practice in by stump shooting my 45 lb recurve on public land? The more I think about it the more appealing it becomes to me to do this.

I'd be refraining from shooting at any animals until I become convinced my aim is good enough. Shooting at a set target seems very mundane to me anymore. Or is it better just to suck it up and embrace target shooting until my skill gets better? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

On army corps land you are not allowed to target shoot at all!

I'd be on national forest land.

I would work on paper targets at first working at shooting groups. This will show accuracy and possible form problems.
Once you are satisfied with your form and accuracy move to 3D targets to simulate hunting situations.
