Default My Missouri stud

My buddy Clayton(fullsizeaggie) and I made the trek to northern Missouri in hopes of soybean fed big deer. We arrived Friday to snow and frigid temps. We scouted and decided with the weather pop up blinds would be our best bet. So we drove to town picked up a few and got our sets put together. Clayton’s in laws own the farm so naturally he got to pick the first set and I chose a big bottom that the soybeans had just been harvested.

Opening morning was cold, like real cold for these Texas boys but we layered up and headed to our spots. I don’t know if you have ever hunted a state with a short rifle season but when the sun comes up it sounds like WW3. I heard Clayton’s 30-06 crack and he put a small doe on the ground.

I was super pumped for him as he had been hunting up here twice before with nothing to show for it.

I sat there hearing shot after shot just wondering when it would be my turn or if I would ever get a shot. All of the sudden I heard two real close. I looked to my left and saw three deer running from the timber, I glassed them and saw a buck, hell he was a shooter! They ran from the gun shots and stopped in front of me at about 250 yards, I settled the cross hairs and let it rip. I could let he was hurt but didn’t know how bad so a threw a shot at him while he was running. It happened so fast that I new he was good but didn’t know how good. I walked to the creek a spotted blood but could hear movement in the creek. I backed out and got help.

Clayton approached from the north of where I thought he was at and I from the south. I saw movement and Clayton hollers that he is alive and takes a shot at him. We lose sight of him and are confused where he is at, all the sudden I look up and he is 3/4 of the way up the bank fight to escape. I draw a bead on him and hit him hard in the neck(only shot I had) then put another one in the boiler room. He rolls down the hill into the icy water and starts floating down stream. He finally stops in the shallower water.

We celebrate for a minute and reminisced on the exciting last few minutes, then realize that we still had to fish him out of the creek. I finally stripped down to my undies and made the plunge, god lord was it cold! I quickly grabbed a leg and hurried back, still not know how good of a buck he was.

I got to the bank and pulled his head out of the water and man was I surprised! The body size of the deer completely threw me off! He was awesome and super heavy. I quickly forgot about my frozen legs and Clayton and hugged and jumped around like school boys. Is was in love with this deer!

It took four of us to get him out of the creek after field dressing him. He was so big I couldn’t believe it. These deer are dang near as big as horses! We snapped a few pics and got him hung up.

Great write up and super nice buck. I met a guy in Missouri this past summer that has 6800 acres of crop land in Missouri. Looks like I need to take him up on his invite to come hunt. Congrats on a great deer.

Great write up .

I never pulled a deer out of a river when its that cold but I have done geese and had to do the same thing strip down and get in .. I know I was having trouble stepping forward as the water level rose up to places that I really did not want to be that cold

Ask and you shall receive

Dang I thought I had more, itís a neat old house, early 1900s. My buddies FIL lives in the house, he farms and drinks and drinks and farms. Lots of beer signs, books and old western movies to keep him entertained. Propane heat and stove. The man lives a simple life thatís for sure.
