    Disking sunflowers

We have a good stance of native some flowers that are dead now. Has anybody allowed them to completely wilt and just disk the entire field in the winter versus shredding them. I know to make the sunflowers come back up a light disking in the winter usually helps stimulate them to grow next year. Instead of having to make two passes to mow them and then to disc them I was wondering wondering you could just make one player pass with disking them under. Just the light topical disc. I don't mind the stubble trying to save on expenses. It is approximately 50 acres. That would cost another $800 to have them shredded then another $800 to have them disc

I would wait until it gets cooler. If you disc them now a lot of the seed could sprout and then die this winter. I don't even know that you would have to disc. Probably have enough seed there to come up in the spring.

Thanks for calling it a disk and not a plow.

Agree with previous. Wait til mid winter for them to harden up and get a bit of decomp on the stalks.

You really don't even have to disc or shred them. Just let them fall on to the ground and nature will do its thing the following spring. They just need cold stratification and they will work their way into the ground.

This, if you had a good stand there this year you should again next year with nothing done.
