Normally trad bows are X pounds T 28" draw. The string length is approximately 4" less than the bow length. If you are longer draw than 28 then the increased bend of the limbs increases the draw weight. Under 28 lessens it. Custom bows can be built to your specific request of weight at your draw length. Some bows you can get multiple limb sets to have different weights.

A 45# bow has a 45# pull at the draw length of 28". Depending on the bow, You might get more lbs out of the bow if you pull it more than 28", but I wouldn't recommend it!

Adjusting the string will do nothing to the draw weight!

        Perfect. Thanks for the feedback.

I'll probably start with a lesson and then get set up with a good starter bow. If all checks out, and the addiction begins, I'll have to give Bob Sarrels a call.

And suggestions on recurve vs longbow?

I don't have any long bow experience so I would say recurve. A Samick Sage or similar bow will allow you to start with a lower weight set of limbs then up grade as you strengthen and improve.
