I shared this because it really goes to show how difficult it can be to accurately age bucks from pics alone.
Interesting story with this guy...he was shot this morning. He was 5.5 this year.
Last year he was on the hit list as a cull. He was shot at but the bullet clipped a branch, expanded and deflected. We found white hair and a couple small spots of blood. I put my dog on him. She jumped him pretty quick, ran him over a mile but he never bayed up. We didn't find him and he quit showing up on trail cam pics. He was pretty regular at feeders before so I assumed he was dead.
Recently, this deer starting showing up. I thought the rack looked familiar but the buck looked to be only 2 or 3 years old. The landowner wanted him shot so we hunted him and got him this morning. I found a scar across the bottom of his belly confirming it was the same buck. Somehow he was hit in the abdomen and survived, however, the wound obviously affected him because his body condition was poor.
