I was getting ready to buy a Taurus 1911 or Remington 1911 based on bang for the buck but guy at the gun store talked me into the Iver Johnson eagle. Little over $500 otd has been a great pistol.

I have a Colt Gold Cup Trophy and a STI Ranger II. I would have to give the STI the win. I'm going for over all use. The maintenance and quality of the work is beautiful. The STI shoots amazing as well. I shoot it out to 50yds normally and it is just sweet.

I've heard of people getting a Rock Island Armory and upgrading trigger, match barrel and springs. And I have been told that they perform pretty well for a sub par 1911. And it can be done all for about $500 or less.

What are you going to use it for, what are your expectations and what's your budget?

Threads like this on a "hunting" message board are generally unproductive due to everyone being positive that whatever they own is "the best". If you really want to research 1911's, go to a 1911 specific message board like 1911forum.com or 1911addicts.com. Everyone still has their personal favorites, but you can also see any "problem" threads that will give a truer picture of each maker/model.

My EDC is a 1911, and I own several from different makers.

Are looking for cheap gi model, want some more modern features but still a cheap price, semi custom type gun or what? Dan Wesson you get a lot of bang for your buck, but they aren't 500 dollar throw down guns. Get you a Dan Wesson specialist and invite us to come shoot. Ha ha

I have always liked colt, I'm also a fan of STI.

The TRP doesn't seem bad from springfield. I haven't ever shot one though. Most of the springfield I have seen, or fired haven't really done much for me.

This is the deciding factor in answering the question.
