Default What do you think of this buck

To me this buck looked post mature all last season, really thin and shed his antlers early. Also one of his sheds i picked up was very light again confirming to me that he was probably just very old. However this year he is growing considerably bigger antlers. It looks like he's going to be a main frame 8 with double split g2's and some extras on his bases. So what do you think? Old and just having a good year, or maybe he is younger and was just sick last year with something?

Wow, he's got a great start to what looks like an awesome set of horns this year! Not sure why he was only a 6pt last year, he was mature. Maybe he was sick or something

I just don't see an old deer in those pics. He was pretty unhealthy looking last year for sure. I could see how the "old deer" thought comes to mind. But, he sure does look healthy this year. He ought to be a good one.

I never would of guessed that to be the same deer but I think you have him nailed. Awesome! I would wack him this year and be happy. He is going to be cool looking when it is all said and done. Good luck!

I see the mark now that you pointed that out. Who knows why his rack was crappy last year ? Lots of mysteries where deer are concerned. I do believe it's the same deer though.

Yep, same deer unreal! I still think he's got some age on him though. I had a buck that never bigger than 125 until he it 8.5, then the next year he went in the 140s

He's turning out pretty cool! Still another month of growing left too. It's pretty nice when a deer not on the radar surprises you. How old you think he is? Standing next to a 4yo he's a decent amount smaller body wise.

With those back hocks stained like that, and the way he stands back on them hooves he's at least 6.5. Probably more like 8.5. Body size starts to shrink on some deer when they get older quite a bit.

Unfortunately no, last year was my first year hunting the place. I have a few pics from the previous guy who hunted it but I don't see any that match him.

Hill country deer can easily be 1-2 years older than you think that they are.

That's what I'm hoping, I probably won't try and kill him this season because he doesn't meet the cull criteria on my lease and there are better "trophy" deer in the area. It will be interesting to see if he keeps recovering and if so what he does next year.

What a deer. Probably just rutted down too hard the year before his 6 point rack. No telling really though.

He must have had a real bad year in 2016

JeffK and MASTERS are thinking along the same lines as I am.

Wonder how many would have whacked him for a cull and never known what he had the potential for?
Any pics of same buck in 2015?

I have a buck that I think could potentially be him, 2yo 8 with a split g2. Hard to say though cause I don't have many pics of him.

I study the deer on my property extensively to try and keep up with them year to year and have been pretty successful in doing so. With that said, I don't think I would have made the connection on this deer. Great job!

And heck of a buck!

I can get pretty analytical about deer hunting I did have a pretty good idea it was him from the start just cause he was easy to identify with the condition his body was in all spring and early summer.

This is exactly why we got away from cull hunting on our place and only hunt off of age. Seems to be working. There are obviously exceptions both ways though

Looks like he's about finished out, any ideas on what he'd score? I'm thinking mid to high 140s. He has around 6" coming off the back of his base that is hard to see.

I would say he is in the upper 150's to maybe 160 now. He should make the 160's if he keeps on growing. I gave him around 18"-20" of NT.
