Wife and I recently made this and it turned out really good. Used ground venison in place of the pork and beef. Soon as it gets cool again will probably make some more. Also, very cheap to make. A head of cabbage is like 40 cents.

    Cabbage Roll Soup.

    1 large onion, diced
    3 cloves garlic, minced
    1 lb lean ground beef
    ½ lb lean ground pork
¾ cup uncooked long grain rice
1 medium head cabbage, chopped (core removed)
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
    2 tablespoons tomato paste
    4 cups beef broth
1½ cups V8 or other vegetable juice
    1 teaspoon paprika
    1 teaspoon thyme
    1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    1 bay leaf
    salt and pepper, to taste

In a large pot, brown onion, garlic, pork and beef. Drain any fat.
Stir in chopped cabbage and let cook until slightly softened (about 3 minutes).
Add all remaining ingredients, bring to a boil and reduced heat to medium low. Cover and simmer on low until rice is fully cooked (about 25-30 minutes)
    Remove bay leaf and serve.

Here's a "Yankee" (Michigan) recipe, but it's good.

            Grandpa’s Cabbage Soup
1 ½ cup cubed ham or smoked pork shoulder 2 med onions, sliced thinly
2 Tbsp oil 2 Cans Chicken broth
3 Cans water 1 (or 2) cans stewed tomatoes
1 can of Great Northern Beans, drained and rinsed
½ head shredded cabbage ½ cup diced celery
2 stalks celery w/leaves chopped coarsely 3 cloves minced fresh garlic

Saute the onions in oil, add all remaining ingredients less tomatoes, and bring to a boil.
Reduce to a simmer and cook 20-30 minutes. Add tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste,
            cook 10-20 minutes more.

Cook it up before the afternoon hunt, then just warm it up, grab a cold one and some nice crusty French bread--and only one dish to wash.

I like more meat so I use the smoked shoulder (picnic) cut into bite-sized pieces instead of the cubed ham.

This is our traditional stew: http://www.mywildkitchen.com/traditional-venison-stew/.

And this one is loaded with mushrooms: http://www.mywildkitchen.com/venison-mushroom-stew/.

Coach always adds ketchup to his, and I just have to have beer bread muffins to make mine complete: http://www.mywildkitchen.com/beer-br...r-ingredients/.
